New Book Chronicles Bonneville History and Pursuit of the Motorcycle Land Speed Record GRASS VALLEY, CA – In his new book, “World’s Fastest Motorcycle,” author John Stein journeys to the Bonneville Salt Flats to chronicle the history of motorcycle land speed racing and the monumental 2006 BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials, where three of the sport’s leaders campaigned for world record honors. Scheduled for release on August 31, 2007, Stein’s book, which includes over two hundred photographs, gives readers a chance to experience the triumphs and failures of land speed racing alongside the fastest men in the world. Stein’s “World’s Fastest Motorcycle” examines not only the record setting motorcycles of land speed racing, but also the personalities of the builders and riders. In September 2006, three men – Denis Manning, Mike Akatiff and Sam Wheeler – arrived at the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials with their well-designed streamliners and competed to set a new motorcycle land speed record. The conditions on the salt flats were perfect for racing and the record was broken three times in five days. Prior to 2006 trials, the motorcycle land speed record had not been broken since 1990. Ultimately, Manning and his #7 Streamliner, piloted by Chris Carr, emerged victorious. With a blistering speed of 350.884 mph, the #7 Streamliner entered the record books as the world’s fastest motorcycle. Currently, Manning and his BUB Racing team are gearing up for another run at the world record during the 2007 BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials, scheduled for September 2-6 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Akatiff and Wheeler are also readying their streamliners for the competition. “Land speed racing has such a storied history,” says Manning. “I hope we can add another thrilling chapter in 2007.” The foreword to Stein’s “World’s Fastest Motorcycle” is written by noted motorsports commentator Dave Despain. Despain says, ” ‘World’s Fastest Motorcycle’ stands as evidence of two important facts: the appeal of Bonneville is undiminished after more than 100 years of salt flat speed runs; and, nowhere in Bonneville history will you find a more interesting, innovative, and loveable bunch of characters than those who cross the salt on two wheels.” Despain is also the narrator of the acclaimed SPEED Channel TV Show, The World’s Fastest Motorcycle. The DVD of the show is included as a bonus for those who purchase the Stein’s book.
