Ohnsorg, Young Take Multiple Wins In First Annual Westby Classic With CMRA

Brandon Young won the Formula 1 race and logged two more podiums and Kyle Ohnsorg took home five podiums during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) First Annual Westby Classic event this past Sunday, May 16, on the 1.8mile, 11-turn course at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma.
Heavy storms overnight made for humid weather with temperatures in the 80’s and a high chance of rain greeted competitors as the lap times stayed fast on the 1.8-mile, 11-turn course.

Young rode his Suzuki GSX-R1000 for the fastest lap of the day on Lap 2 of the premier Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, running a 1:17.924. Young went on to take three podiums total, winning Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, and 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert.

Kyle Ohnsorg was the strongest in the middleweights, taking five podiums total with his Yamaha YZF-R6, winning South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, C Superbike Expert, B Superstock Expert, B Superbike Expert, and taking second in C Superbike Expert, and third in Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert. Ohnsorg also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line again during the Formula 1 race.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race promised to be a nail biter, with morning qualifying having competitors only tenths of a second apart. As the 17-bike grid lined up for the start, Brandon Young had the pole with Craig Montgomery in second and Kyle Ohnsorg completing the front row..

The starting lights went out, and Young put his head down and ran. Montgomery was hot on his heels, and Kyle Ohnsorg in pursuit. Young crushed Lap 2 with a 1:17.924, turning the fastest lap of the race. Montgomery answered with a 1:18.107 while Ohnsorg hung in with a 1:18.294. Young Canadian racer, Braeden Ortt, aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 tangled with Joseph Caruso aboard an BMW S1000RR turning a 1:19.167 to Caruso’s 1:19.578, and taking over fourth. As the final laps wound down, Young edged Montgomery by 1.777 seconds to take the win. Montgomery crossed the line second, Ohnsorg held third, Ortt fourth, and Caruso in fifth. Alonzo Contreras, Bobby Davies, Carl Price, Will Shupak, and Alan Phillips rounded out the top 10.

Robert Duncan and Jacob Napier tied for the Top Novice spot, taking three wins each. Duncan rode his Yamaha YZF-R1 for the wins in OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, and Formula 40 HW Novice. Napier rode his Suzuki GSX-R750 to the wins in Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, and SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice.

Anita Thomas won the “Jennifer Millsap Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A.G. Horn, for her combined finishes in four races.
