Ty Howard, final rider for the P1 Racing KTM team, rode their Pirelli-shod P1 Racing KTM RC8 to victory at the U.S. National Endurance (USNE) presented by Lucas Oil and WERA National Endurance 8 Hours of Texas Endurance race this past Saturday, March 22. The combined opening round for both events brought the racing action to the Texas World Speedway, in College Station, Texas. The weather started cloudy and cool, turning sunny and warm with a stiff wind, and the track conditions were good, making for fast lap times on the 2.9 mile full course. 

The 8 Hours of Texas Endurance race had a combined grid of 40 teams, with classes including Heavyweight, Middleweight, and Lightweight Endurance. When the lights went out at 10:45 am on the two-wave start, the racing was immediately exciting and competitive. The Suzuki GSX-R1000-mounted BEI/Dunlop Development team of Dustin Dominguez, Sean Dwyer, Billy Ethridge, and Tim Bemisderfer shot ahead of both the I Like Big Gas Team of Scott Buckley, Dewayne Davis, Craig Montgomery, and Brandon Young and the Yamaha YZF-R6-mounted Village Idiots team of Brandon Cleland, Chris Headley, John Orchard, and Garet Tomlinson for the early lead. Team LocoMotion aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 went at it with the Kawasaki ZX636-mounted Excel EMR team, and managed to stay ahead of P1 Racing KTM and Army of Darkness.

The racing was intense, with these four teams holding on to the top four spots for only the first hour. The P1 Racing KTM team of Ryan Andrews, Ty Howard, Eddie Thornton, and Derek Wagnon overcame some difficulties early on with their KTM RC8 to slide past I Like Big Gas, the Village Idiots, and overtake BEI/Dunlop Development for the lead in hour two. The BMW S1000RR-mounted Army of Darkness team of Sam Fleming,Taylor Knapp, Chris Peris, and Ben Walters dispatched both Locomotion and Excel EMR, pulling up to fifth.

In spite of intense competition, these teams held off all comers and gripped the top spots for the next five hours. P1 Racing KTM held off the Village Idiots and BEI/Dunlop Development, while Army of Darkness pulled into fourth and applied pressure on BEI/Dunlop Development from the rear. As the afternoon wore on and the wind picked up, the top teams were still running sub 1:50 laps, and as the clock wound down into the final hour, it would come down to a difference of pit stops. P1 Racing KTM had gotten a lap up on the other top teams, but they were still charging hard. Coming into the last hour, it was going to come down to pit stops. BEI/Dunlop Development had to pit in, and Army of Darkness overtook them for third overall.

Suddenly with 27 minutes left in the race, a red flag came out and all the teams came in and put tire warmers anticipating a restart. The incident caused a stoppage of the race, and the race was called with the last full lap before the red flag’s running order. Army of Darkness had passed into third right before the flag occurred, and didn’t a full lap in that position, so BEI/Dunlop Development was saved by the bell. The race was stopped due to the 30 minutes to continue rule, which is if the “5” board cannot be put up with at least 30 minutes left in the race, the race is called.

P1 Racing KTM took the overall win and the win in Heavyweight with 241 laps, the Village Idiots finished second overall and first in Middleweight with 239 laps, while BEI/Dunlop Development took second in Heavyweight and third overall with 236 laps. Rounding out the top six overall finishers were Army of Darkness, Excel EMR, and Hold Fast.

P1 Racing KTM’s final rider Ty Howard said, “Overall the race was really good. The Pirelli SC2 tires held up great, we did a rear tire change every stop just to be sure, and we used a total of three fronts and seven rears. We had a few issues, but they were quick fixes. We also had a sick rider, but he was able to complete his leg, so we were able to do five stints total. The competition was fierce, and that kept us on our toes the whole race, and I want congratulate the other teams for such a great race. We are looking forward to racing at NOLA.”

Other Lucas Oil winners from Saturday were: BEI/Dunlop Development and Army of Darkness both won $250 in travel money for coming the farthest to get to the event. Army of Darkness went 1450 miles, and BEI traveled 874 miles. Dark Horse Racing won the ION camera for this round as well. BEi RACING / DUNLOP DEVELOPMENT SCORES A PODIUM FINISH IN THE 8 HOURS OF TEXAS.

BEi Racing / Dunlop Development was able to finish in 3rd place at the first round of the new U.S. National Endurance Series presented by Lucas Oil during the “8 hours of Texas Endurance Race” hosted by CMRA at Texas World Speedway in College Station, TX on March 22nd. The team faced many issues right off the bat with all the riders but Dustin Dominguez needing some time to relearn and adapt to the bumpy Texas World Speedway layout. The rough surface caused issues with the team’s machinery with parts known to have been tightened coming loose and necessitating a switch to the “B” bike for the start of the race due to the fork seals leaking on the “A” bike.

Rules differences concerning pit stops slowed the team slightly and didn’t mesh with the team’s strategy of always having a fresh U.S. made Dunlop slick on the rear of the Suzuki GSX-R 1000. Later an issue with a failing fuel pump had the team swapping tanks during a stop. Despite all of this Sean Dwyer in his first race with the team, Tim Bemisderfer and Dustin Dominguez, also in his first ride with BEi, were able to celebrate on the podium with a 3rd place overall and 2nd in the Heavyweight class.

Village Idiots finish 1st in Middleweight WERA US National Endurance & CMRA Endurance Series

The Dunlop/Raceworx/RES backed Village Idiots (Brandon Cleland, Chris Headley, John Orchard, Garet Tomlinson) powered their Yamaha R6 to win Middleweight Superbike at the combined WERA US National Endurance & CMRA Endurance Series at Texas World Speedway on March 22, 2014.

In addition to the Middleweight class victory, the CMRA #1 plate holder, Village Idiots, showed their endurance skills as the 600cc team raced to a 2nd overall against the competing 1000cc teams. “The 1000cc machines have such a strong advantage at Texas World because of the long front straight,” said Brandon Cleland. “We rode the wheels off our 600cc and very pleased to be standing on the 2nd step of the podium against these National teams.”

Chris Headley started the race for the Village Idiots and rode a flawless stint. When the green flag wave Headley crossed the finish in 5th place. As Headley’s stint progressed, the veteran rider continued to put down consistently fast times turning a personal best of 1:47.985 on lap 27 of his 39 lap stint. When Headley pulled into the pits, the Village Idiots were in 1st place.

After the first pit stop, Garet Tomlinson took to the saddle next in 2nd place. Tomlinson may be the youngest of the Village Idiots, 21, but is no rookie to endurance racing. Tomlinson showed his skills by laying down 43 impressive laps to keep the Village Idiots in the 2nd overall position.

The next pit stop saw a fresh rear American Dunlop and Brandon Cleland take command of the Dunlop/Raceworx/RES R6. Cleland was able to find his grove and steadily make up ground on the 1st place position. Cleland was on a tear as he set his fastest lap of the stint with a 1:47.530 on lap 18 of 40. Cleland was able to make the pass for the lead three hours into the race and would pull into pit in the #1 position.

Multi CMRA Formula 40 Champion, John Orchard, took the reins to start the fourth stint for the Village Idiots. Orchard was extremely consistent during his stint and never saw a bad lap time. Orchard put down 41 of the Village Idiots laps and pulled into the pits in the #1 position. The Idiots would mount a new American front and rear Dunlop tire that would last them to the checkered flag. During the change, the #1 spot was taken over and the Village Idiots would carry on in 2nd overall.

Tomlinson would mount up next, taking control of the Dunlop/Raceworx/RES R6 for the second time during the eight hour race and put in an even more impressive ride than his first. “My second stint felt great. The fresh Dunlop tires made the difference in my performance,” Tomlinson added. Tomlinson would lay down his fastest lap of the race with a 1:47.610 during 42 lap stint.

Cleland would ride his second stint of the race keeping the Village Idiots in 2nd overall and 1st in class. With 50 minutes to go, Cleland would pit and hand the motorcycle over to Headley to finish out the race. Headley raced on for 10 laps before the red flag waved. With less than 30 minutes to of racing to go, the red flag would ultimately serve as the checkered flag and the eight hours of Texas was deemed a complete race.

With the Village Idiots 2nd overall, they now take control of the CMRA Overall points lead and continue to put distance on the competition with their second class victory of the season. The Village Idiots will travel to NOLA on April 5, 2014 to compete at round two of the WERA US National Endurance event.

P1 Racing KTM Wins CMRA 8 Hours of Texas Championship Endurance At Texas World Speedway

CMRA held its second round of Big Bike Endurance and Mini Sprint grids, bringing over 10 hours of racing action to the Texas World Speedway course in College Station, Texas. The weather started cloudy and cool, turning sunny and warm with a stiff wind, and the track conditions were good, making for fast lap times on the 2.9 mile full course.

The Mini Sprint grids ran the 1.8 mile short course and were an exciting warm up for the 8 hour endurance race, with Formula 4 and E Superstock having 30 entries each. The new 300 Supersport, 500 Supersport (both sponsored by Altus Lawton Motorsports), and 500 Classic classes also gained in popularity, with a combined grid of 18 bikes.

The 8 Hours of Texas Endurance race had a combined grid of 40 teams, with classes including A Superbike, C Superbike, Formula 2, and Modern Classic Endurance.
