AFM Resumes at Sonoma

The AFM returned for Round Two of the 2013 season last weekend and did not disappoint. Close racing, talent stacked grids and a controversial finish to the day’s Formula Pacific headline race were the talk of the weekend.

Before the green flag had even dropped for the Formula Pacific race the drama had already begun. Regular front runner Lenny Hale failed to make the warm up lap and was also too late to make the grid, meaning that his race and possibly his championship hopes were done early. Off the line Jeremy Toye, runner up at Buttonwillow, led on his Lee’s Cycles ZX-10R from Ricky Corey and Dave Stanton aboard his newly-delivered Graves-built Yamaha R1. Lap three would see the defending champion Corey put his R1 into the lead as Chris Siglin also moved forward into the third spot after a poor getaway. The podium positions would remain that way but the race at the front was nowhere near over. The gap closed enough at one point for Toye to attempt a pass that nearly ended in tears as his front Pirelli contacted the rear Dunlop of Corey in turn seven. As the last lap began the race appeared to be over but a conservative lap from Corey combined with a determined effort from Toye meant that by the end of the lap the lead was within striking distance. With Corey not protecting the inside in Turn 11 Toye made his move from far back and the two met at the apex with Toye’s bike making contact with the front of Corey’s, causing him to stand up and preventing him from accelerating towards the finish as he watched Toye ride off into the distance.

The ensuing podium was well attended as spectators hoped to see the reaction that Ricky Corey would have to the move, one that he called “amazing” after several moments of carefully considering his words. The results mean that Rickey Corey now leads the championship by just four points over Jeremy Toye while Chris Siglin sits 16 behind. Siglin, however, will not be a threat to either man as he announced from the podium that the race would be his last for the time being. The BMW rider has been a consistent threat for the win for the past several years and grabbed the AFM #1 plate in 2011.

In the middleweight classes Daytona Sportbike regular and local racer Joey Pascarella took his brand new Triumph Daytona 675R to three wins and Oregon racer Andy DiBrino picked up two for himself in 750cc Superbike and Formula One. Round one standout Tucker Lancaster failed to pick up a win but thanks to four second-place finishes remains in the driver’s seat for the championship in four classes.

In the 650cc twins classes Jason Catching completed an almost flawless weekend with two wins and a second place. In the quarter liter category Robert Wetterau set a class lap record on his way to a win in 250cc Production.

Exceptional novices include Bassem Abdouni (three wins), Brad Munson (three wins), Ricardo Villegas (two wins), Andy Marinshaw (two wins), Robert Lazzarini (two wins), Darius Khashabi (two wins), David LaBree (win, two podiums) and Yovany Alvarez (win, two podiums).

Round three will take place at Thunderhill Raceway Park on June 1st and 2nd as the championship battles unfold in the rolling hills of Willows.
