PASCARELLA BRINGS THE HEAT AT THUNDERHILL
Round 4 of the AFM series at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA, could be summed up with one word: Heat. The thermometers topped out near enough to 110 that it didn’t make a difference, turning the winds from the north into something more like a hair dryer than welcome relief. The heat would have a particular impact in the premier class Dunlop Race Tire Services Formula Pacific race, which would be extended to 12 laps for the first time.
After Saturday’s qualifying, Lenny Hale on his Kawasaki ZX-10R secured the pole position, ahead of Joey Pascarella and Wyatt Farris, who were each also on Kawasakis. Incidents in prior races necessitated the abbreviation of the Formula Pacific race in the previous rounds, but smooth sailing in the hot morning allowed the race to continue with the scheduled 12 laps on the close to 3 mile course.
The race started with Hale and Pascarella duking it out for the hole shot. Hale was able to edge out Pascarella in turn 2 while Farris slotted into third spot. Chris Siglin on his Kawasaki ZX-10R, Sebastio Ferreira atop his Yamaha YZF-R1 and Cory Call with his BMW S1000RR rounded out the top six at the end of the first lap.
On the next lap, Siglin and Ferreira traded positions two times while Pascarella worked his way in front of Hale for the lead. As the riders streamed past the start/finish line on the high speed front straight, Ferreira’s bike went off track and cartwheeled past the haybales. The red flag came out and the riders were sent back to their pits to await a restart.
The riders had time to refuel and hydrate as the heat intensified and when the took the green flag to start for the second time, Pascarella and Farris jumped out in front of Hale, Siglin, McDonough and Call. The first laps then turned into an all out challenge as Call swept McDonough and Siglin in turn 2. Siglin immediately fought back coming out of turn 2 while Farris worked his way around Pascarella in turn 3 to take the overall lead. Farris was only able to maintain the lead over Pascarella for six more turns and Siglin put Hale behind him at the end of the back straight. At the end of the first laps, the top six was Pascarella, Farris, Siglin, Hale, Call and McDonough, in that order.
As the race continued, two things happened consistently: Pascarella strung together 1:48s at the front and Call continued to put riders behind him. At the halfway mark, Call passed Farris in turn 10 to secure second and try to catch up to Pascarella. After 8 laps, the traditional end of the race, it was Pascarella, followed by Call, Farris, Hale, Siglin and McDonough. McDonough then seemed to dig deep in the final laps and powered his way through the heat to climb two more positions.
When the checkered flag came out, Pascarella coasted past for the win. Call took a quick look over his shoulder before lofting his front wheel to take second place on the rear wheel and Farris secured third.

WILLOWS, Calif. — Joey Pascarella took the top spot on the podium for round four of the American Federation of Motorcyclists (AFM) premier class on Sunday at Thunderhill Raceway. The race started with Pascarella in second position, who then took the lead and led all 12 laps of the race. Pascarella currently leads the Dunlop Race Tire Service Formula Pacific Championship.
