Paving has been completed on two changes to the track at Road Atlanta. In the last few days, new asphalt was laid to form a new chicane near Turn Four in the Esses section and a new, motorcycle-only Turn 12, as previously announced by the track. “It looks interesting,” John Jacobi told Roadracingworld.com Monday with an inflection of skepticism in his voice. In addition to being a winning rider for Vesrah Suzuki in the WERA National Endurance and National Challenge series, Jacobi is an instructor at the Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School (KSSS) at Road Atlanta. Jacobi saw the new sections for the first time Monday, while doing a KSSS school on the existing road course. “I don’t know if it’s going to work or not,” continued Jacobi. “In the Esses there are now two chicanes back-to-back. Between Turn Two and Turn Five there are six different apexes. With as much dirt as they moved it would’ve been easier to just make a straight shot from Turn Two to Turn Five and kept the track fast. “And the new Turn 12, it’s tight. The entrance is wide, but it’s like a single-lane road coming out. And it’s a sharp, 90-degree corner.” Jacobi said the layout of the new Turn 12 may lead to problems during WERA Endurance races (which unlike AMA Superbike events uses the paddock outside of the road course) because one rider may be trying to out-brake another rider into the corner only to find out too late that the leading rider is going into pit lane. He also said that there may be some aggressive, motocross-like passing going into the final turn. “It’s going to be real interesting to see what the AMA boys think when they come here to test,” Jacobi concluded.
