Former World Supersport regular Chris Peris and emerging talent Garrett Willis were the stars of the WERA West regional race event Sunday at California Speedway, in Fontana, California. Peris, riding his Dunlop-shod Evan Steel Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000 AMA Superstock bike, turned the fastest lap times of the weekend en route to winning the 6-lap A Superbike and Formula One races. Peris was chased to the finish line each time by Lee’s Cycles’ Jeremy Toye, who started farther back on the grids on his GSX-R1000 Superbike. No Limit Motorsports’ Jason Curtis was third in each race, just ahead of Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich, who started at the back of the grids but turned the second-fastest lap times in both races. Curtis later won the A Superstock (which did not include Peris, Toye or Ulrich) race by a large margin on his Dunlop-fitted Suzuki GSX-R1000. Willis was the big winner in the smaller displacement classes. Riding a Pirelli-equipped, Roseville Cycle Center-backed Honda CBR600RR, Willis, 17, won the B Superstock, C Superstock and C Superbike sprints. In C Superstock and C Superbike, Willis was challenged by Graves Yamaha’s 15-year-old Tommy Aquino, Jr. Willis caught a break through backmarkers on the last lap of the C Superbike contest to secure his victory, and in C Superstock Aquino came from behind to lead on the final lap only to lose that lead when he said his brakes faded, causing him to overshoot a turn. Willis finished his day by winning the six-lap B Superstock race by over 12 seconds. Bradley Adams won the B Superbike event (which did not include Willis or Aquino) on his Advanced Kawasaki ZX-6R. Mark Burkhart, the 2007 AMA Supermoto Champion, and his Graves Yamaha teammate Brandon Currie, the 2007 AMA Supermoto Lites Champion, both enjoyed their road racing debuts Sunday at California Speedway. Burkhart finished a best of ninth in the 28-rider B Superbike race, while Currie’s top finish was 15th in the 22-entry B Superstock sprint. Both Burkhart and Currie rode ex-Josh Herrin Graves Yamaha YZF-R6 Supersport bikes.
