R.A.C.E. SuperSeries Round 4 Report

Nelson Circuit Entertains

The Shannonville R.A.C.E. SuperSeries Round 4 action took place on the original 1.8km Nelson Circuit this weekend but the smaller work surface was ideal for re-writing the record books. Ideal weather conditions provided a perfect atmosphere as a large contingent of motorcycle road racers battled it out in Sunday’s finals.

Kingston’s “Jammin’” Jeff Williams looked to beat all comers after his performance in Saturday’s qualifying sessions, but when the big bikes rolled out for the Pro Superbike final, a fuel leak on the BMW S1000RR sent Williams to spectator status. The fans got their money’s worth, however, in a barn burner of a race between reigning Pro Superbike champion Michael Leon and former champ Jim Proulx. Proulx got the holeshot lead to start the contest and despite an early large lead, was reeled in by the Royal Distributing sponsored BMW of Michael Leon, who first bested Derrick Whyte for second and then challenged Proulx for the entire 14 lap contest. Leon presented a front wheel at every opportunity but when the checked fabric was aired out, it was Proulx with a narrow advantage at the finish line. Whyte held on for third with Newcastle’s Elie Daccache in fourth. Chris Brent had a great run to finish in fifth.

In Pro 600 action, series leader, Elie Daccache jumped out to the early lead and held on for the win after a race long battle with runner up Chris Brent and Grant Smith who joined him on the podium. Belleville’s Mike Raniowski finished just out of a podium position in fourth with a gutsy effort after a racing injury ended his weekend in Nova Scotia just last week. In fifth was Kingston’s Chris Fehr.

In Amateur Superbike action, Cameron Walker took fastest lap and race win, well ahead of a charging field of riders looking to shore up runner-up status. Behind him, Vivian Mathews and Sean Latta were having an epic battle, until Latta made a miscue and crashed out of the contest. The vacancy was quickly filled by Eros Mukja, who chased Mathews to the finish line, for a third place finish. Edie Zahra had a good outing, finishing in fourth with J.F. Cloutier returning from injury to finish in fifth.

Cameron Walker again bested the field in Amateur 600 racing, winning a close contest. Walker was pushed hard to the finish, but when Vivian Mathews crashed out after colliding with Hasting’s rider, Leo Foley, it was Sean Latta who jumped in to take second. Foley recovered to take the final step of the podium. In fourth was Dave Buckland while Andy Dickinson had a good ride to take fifth.

Michael Leon and Jeff Williams resumed hostilities in the Open Sprint race, and this time Williams took the win over Leon, after both riders shattered the Nelson Track lap record books, with Williams now owning a new record of 54.039. Best seat in the house went to Jim Proulx who grabbed the final step of the podium, with Derrick Whyte in fourth and Dan Willard taking fifth.

In Mopar Express Lane Lightweight Production racing, Tyler Moore took his second win in as many races after a race long battle with Huntsville racer Dwayne Bucholtz, who had to settle for second. CBR250R Honda rider J.P. Schroeder finished in third, just ahead of Alan Burns and Connor Campbell.

Matthew Annable won the Novice 600 race while behind him, Dwayne Bucholtz battled with rookie sensation Kayla Hannaford. Hannaford came from a long way back and managed to squeeze past Bucholtz at the midpoint of the contest, only to lose the backend and crash heavily out of contention. Newcomer Jeff Langlois inherited third while Claude Neveu finished in fourth.

Veteran rider Hans Van Sluewen continues to dominate the Lightweight Superbike class with another win after a lengthy contest with Bobcaygeon’s Joshua Thomas in second. In third was Jared Walker while Giancarlo DeLuca took fourth. In fifth was Justin Marshall.

In Masters Middleweight action it was Grant Smith with the win and a new track record of 56.182. Smith got off to the early lead and never looked back. The battle for second place went to Steve “Doc” Walker, just ahead of “Take Mike For Granite” sponsored Mike Raniowski.
