AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST ASSOCIATION AND MID-OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE ISSUE STATEMENT ON PASSING OF MOTORCYCLE COMPETITOR MIKE WELLS
LEXINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and WERA Motorcycle Roadracing extend their deepest condolences to the family, friends and fellow competitors of Mike Wells.
Wells, age 67, of Boyton Beach, Fla., a lifetime AMA member and long-time WERA competitor, passed away [July 7].

Update: Mike Wells was competing in the 350cc Grand Prix WERA Vintage race July 7 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. At the end of the race, according to AMA’s James Holter, Wells “ran off at Turn One, was not on the racing line, and according to witnesses was slumped over his motorcycle.” Wells crashed his motorcycle in a grass area inside of Turn One, where he received medical attention from a doctor and other safety workers. Wells was transported to a local hospital via ambulance, but he did not survive. An official cause of death has not been announced.
