Former AMA Superbike Series regular and AFM Overall Champion James Randolph, big winner at last November’s WERA West event at the Las Vegas Classic Course, came back and won all the big-bore races over the weekend. Riding a Pirelli-shod, Kyle Racing-sponsored Suzuki GSX-R1000, Randolph won the Heavyweight Solo 20 race on Saturday afternoon, and backed it up with a trio of wins on Sunday. Randolph cleared out to comfortable margins of victory in the A Superstock and Formula 1 races, but held off Mattias Ullholm on his Dunlop-shod, Vortex-sponsored Suzuki GSX-R1000 by 0.962-second to win the A Superbike race at the end of the day on Sunday. Elena Myers continued her winning ways, taking her Kawasaki- and Roadracingworld.com-backed ZX-6R to a solid win in the B Superbike contest, beating Shane McGoey. Myers also took her Dunlop-shod machine to a narrow 0.517-second win in C Superbike Shane McGoey, also on a Kawasaki ZX-6R. Up-and-coming young racer Ryan Matter took his Joe Rocket-backed, Dunlop-shod Honda RS125 to a pair of wins as well, holding of Honda RS125-mounted Peter Lenz by 0.254-second in the 125cc GP race and just barely beating Twin Works Factory-backed Jay Avansino’s Michelin-shod Suzuki SV650 to the line in Formula 2. On Saturday, Yates and crew chief Jimmy Summers used their pitboard to manage strategy for the 20-lap Heavyweight Expert Solo 20 race resulting in a second place finish behind winner James Randolph. During Sunday’s 750cc Superstock Expert race, Yates got a mediocre start on his SWIGZ.COM GSX-R600 and was in 7th position on the first lap, but battled back 4 spots to finish 3rd behind race winner Garrett Willis and second place Ed Oporto. “By the time I got through traffic and could see Ed on lap 6, he already had 2 seconds on me and I thought it would be better to keep the podium position than take crazy chances on the last couple of laps,” said Yates after the race. In other weekend action, Yates finished 5th in the 1000cc Superbike Expert race on his GSX-R600, giving him 4th place in the championship and $500 from Bike 911 in finishing money. “We were a little bummed to miss out on 3rd in the championship by only 1 point, but Matt Ullholm put on the ride of his life to beat Eddie Barajas and Davie Stone today and he deserves the result,” conceded Yates during post-race ceremonies. “I also want to thank Alex Assanti and the Bike 911 crew for their generous sponsorship and contingency incentives in WERA West racing this year,” added Yates.
