AFM Round 3 at Infineon Raceway James Randolph took the win in the Bay Area Riders Formula Formula Pacific race at Infineon Raceway on Sunday, giving his Dunlop-shod, San Jose BMW S1000R its first trip to the top of the podium in the premiere class of AFM racing. Randolph set a blistering pace early in the race, opening up a sizeable gap on the first lap, as he let the rest of the field sort it out in the battle for second place. “I got a good start and just got away,” said Randolph, the only rider in the race to break into the 1:38s. “Eugene, my friend and tuner, did a good job with my (pit) board – at the end of the first lap I saw a plus two, and thought ‘wow, this is going to be a long race’. So I just kept on working on it, looking at that board every lap, riding my pace. The BMW worked flawlessly, I just kept on doing my job. Also Willie and Chris for your hard work, Spencer for your work with the lap timer, and Dan Kyle.” Second place went to last round’s winner Ricky Corey and his Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R1. “Sorry Dave, I got ya a little hard in Turn 1 there,” said Corey from the winner’s circle, who passed former AFM Number One Dave Stanton to take second with a tight pass on the front straight. “It was a little tight there, but I had to make it. Early in the race, Dave just came out of nowhere, got past me, and put in some pretty good laps – I had to push it to keep up with him, and took my only passing opportunity, which was in Turn 1, and made it work. James ran an amazing race, I just couldn’t hang with him – he was just on it.” Martin Szwarc took third, putting in another solid weekend on his Pirelli-shod, 2008 GSX-R1000. “What a fun race – everyone’s going fast, and these other guys have been doing this for a lot longer than me,” exclaimed Szwarc who took third from Stanton with a strong pass into Turn 7 late in the race. “I remember when I just started riding, coming out here and watching Dave Stanton win championships and thinking ‘Man, these guys are FAST’ – it’s just a priviledge to be up here! The bike is handling so well, it’s all thanks to Mike Canfield who is tuning the chassis. And I have to thank Ernie, who is helping me out by working on the bike so I can work on my riding. Ken Hill has been the big change this year. I’ve been riding the same bike the last couple of years and thought ‘Let’s just work on me, there’s a lot more to be had there’. He’s been a big help, it’s still a work in progress, but it’s coming along great. I’m having a lot of fun this year!” The next round of AFM action takes place on June 4th and 5th at Thunderhill Raceway.
