Barnes, Rapp Set And Re-Set Lap Record At CVMA

Lowry Clinches Unlimited Shootout Title

Attack Performance brought a rocket-fast Kawasaki ZX-10R to the penultimate round of the inaugural Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association season, and Michael Barnes and Steve Rapp used it to set and re-set the track record over the weekend.

And Karl Lowry took his Yamaha YZF-R1 to a steady fourth in the SoCal Track Days Unlimited Shootout, clinching the club’s first-ever overall No. 1 plate.

Lap times over the two-day event started out fast, with Barnes getting in some track time before participating in the Macau GP setting the quickest time in qualifying with a 1:48.941, more than a second quicker than his closest competitor, Dale Kieffer, winner of last month’s Unlimited Shootout.

Barnes, who raced a Harley-Davidson XR1200 in this year’s AMA Pro Racing series, took the Kawasaki shod with Dunlop’s AMA Pro Superbike slicks to a 1:47.912 lap in Saturday’s Pirelli/CT Racing Formula Open sprint. On Sunday, AMA Superbike and XR1200 racer and Daytona 200 winner Steve Rapp jumped on the bike and won the Sunday Pirelli/CT Racing Formula Open race, logging a 1:47.413 lap on the 2.68-mile course.

Rapp also won the SoCal Track Days Unlimited Shootout on Sunday over James Randolph who ran a 1:49.316 lap on his Dunlop-shod KTM RC8R and Canadian racer Pete de Graaf, who turned a 1:49.115 lap on his Dunlop-shod Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Lowry was fast a best of 1:49.438 in the Unlimited Shootout aboard his Dunlop-shod, Graves Motorsports YZF-R1, but could not quite hang with the leading trio. Still, his fourth-place finish sealed the Unlimited Shootout Championship, and Lowry earned the right to carry the No. 1 plate in next year’s CVMA series.

Young Guns Lex Hartl and Ryan Matter continued their 600cc duel in the desert, with Hartl and his Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6 taking the wins in Saturday’s and Sunday’s Michelin/Racers Edge Formula Middleweight races, and winning in Sunday’s Dunlop/Erion Racing-backed SuperSport Middleweight race as well.

Matter won Saturday’s SuperSport Middleweight race, and took the win on Sunday in the TrackDaz Middleweight Shooting after a thrilling battle with Hartl that came down to a last-lap braking duel at the end of the back straight. Hartl had closed and made the pass, and both later said they were on the ragged edge of control, but Matter managed to take the position back on the binders and held off Hartl to the line.

CVMA principal and co-founder Dustin Coyner and young standout Andrew Zabzdyr took their Suzuki SV650s to their third straight win in the West Coast GP Cycles Team Challenge Lightweight, sealing the Championship in the class.
