MotoAmerica racer and Daytona 200 winner Steve Rapp showed up with his personal Aprilia RSV4 racebike and took the wins in the Formula One and A Superbike races at the WERA West Presented by Lucas Oil Products event at Buttonwillow Raceway Park.

Rapp, who is celebrating his 20th year as a professional road racer, showed up to WERA’s first visit to the 3.0-mile track since 2012 with his Dunlop-shod 2013 Aprilia, his former streetbike which now is fettled by Southern California Aprilia guru Amauri Nunes and with suspension by J.J. Matter.

In the Formula One race, Rapp started ninth, shot into second by the end of the first lap and passed and pulled away from Corey Sarros, winner of every previous WERA Formula One race held so far in the 2016 season. At the end of six laps, Rapp had notched a best lap time of 1:46.963 en route to a 3.973-second margin of victory over Sarros. Christopher Carron was third, with Curtis Biegel, Scott Tillery and Jay Millhiser completing the top six.

It was much the same in the A Superbike race a few moments later. Rapp started from 10th on the grid, was in third by the end of the first lap and in the lead the next time he crossed the stripe. Rapp stretched the gap to 6.278 seconds at the finish, turning a best at 1:47.018 on the way to the win. Tillery was second and Biegel third.

Sarros pulled away from the A Superstock field, taking his Shades of Vail-backed, Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R1000 to an 8.207-second victory margin over Tillery, with Carron completing the podium.

In mediumweight competition, Michael Weir took the C Superbike win, Kevin Murphy took the B Superbike win, Ezra Beaubier took the C Superstock win–his first on a 600cc machine–and Edgar Zaragoza won the B Superstock race.
