The complete repaving of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was finished yesterday, and with no tests scheduled before the July 21-23 combined MotoGP and AMA National weekend, the question of potential excessive tire wear looms large. When teams first tested at the new Miller Motorsports Park last April, riders on all brands experienced accelerated tire wear, with some riders burning up tires in five laps. Based on that test and follow-up tests, tire companies built and brought tires able to go race distance, for use during this weekend’s AMA National at Miller Motorsports Park. Asked about the situation at Laguna Seca, Dennis Smith of Sport Tire Services, the Dunlop racing tire vendor, said at Miller Motorsports Park, “There will be a lot of guessing going on about what tires to use.” Whether or not the untested pavement could lead to a situation similar to that encountered at the 2005 F1 car race at Indianapolis is unknown. In verifying the complete repaving, on Friday Laguna Seca’s Reece White e-mailed Roadracingworld.com, “The repaving is happening literally as we speak. The asphalt should be completely laid down by 6:00 p.m. today (Friday), with the obvious finishing touches to occur after that is complete. The answer to your question is yes, the race this year will be run on different pavement.” Reece refered Roadracingworld.com to the official Laguna Seca website for more information and photos: ~http://www.laguna-seca.com/pressreleases/index.cfm?ID=238~
