The 2.2-mile racing surface at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has been completely ground down, leveled and repaved, and it is scheduled to receive an FIM homologation inspection by Claude Danis next week, in preparation for the 2007 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. “It’s done!” an excited Gil Campbell, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca CEO/General Manager told Roadracingworld.com June 14. “We started grinding on May 21. We completed paving last Thursday [June 7].” Campbell said exactly 4 cm of the old surface was removed and exactly 4 cm of new racing surface was laid back down by the same company that repaved the track for 2006, Pavex. The surface was measured smooth by a profilograph measuring system. No other changes to the surface or layout were made. Later this week FIM-homologated non-slip paint will be applied to the track and its curbs. Campbell said she did not know the final price tag on the repaving work, partly because some of the work was covered under warranty by Pavex, which was contracted to do the job directly by Monterey County, but she hoped to include dollar amounts in a press release announcing the outcome of the track’s FIM homologation inspection next week. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca made several safety enhancements and repaved its racing surface last year in preparation for the 2006 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. A variety of factors, including record high temperatures and a short curing time, led to the track coming apart in some sections during that event, and some substantial bumps were present in the surface even before motorcycles took to the track last year.
