R.A.C.E. SuperSeries Round 3 Report

The weather was perfect for this weekends Canada Weekend and the celebratory mood translated to some excellent racing on Shannonville Motorsports Park’s short Nelson Circuit. It’s been a few years since the “Birthplace of Champions” has held a contest on the original 1.8km layout and it provided some close and methodical racing.

Royal Distributing’s Michael Leon jumped out to the early lead in Pro Superbike action with Elie Daccache hot on his heels. The two riders pulled a gap on the remainder of the field almost immediately with Pro Superbike champion Jim Proulx close behind them in a lonely third. Behind Proulx, the remaining riders paired up, with Derrick White and Steve “Doc” Walker embroiled in battle while behind them Fuerst Racing’s Mike Raniowski entangled himself with Daniel-Eric Ouimet. By the time the checkered flag was aired out on lap 14, Leon held his narrow advantage to take the win, leaving Daccache in a close second, despite Daccache recording the fastest lap of the event. Proulx held his gap over the field to take the final step of the podium. Derrick White bested “Doc” Walker for fourth and Daniel-Eric Ouimet made a last corner pass on Belleville’s Mike Raniowski to take over sixth.

In the double- header of Pro6 Cycle/Dunlop Tire Pro 600 Sportbike action, Elie Daccache earned the win in both races, handily romping to two checkered flags, capping off an almost perfect weekend. Belleville rider Mike Raniowski took two second place finishes, battling race long in the first contest with Alan Burns and Brent Strong. In race two of the day, the “Take Mike for Granite” sponsored Raniowski waged a war with Brent Strong who stuffed him going into Allen’s corner to push Raniowski back to third. On the penultimate lap of the race, Raniowski returned the favour and regained the second step of the podium, leaving Strong in third. Kingston’s “Jammin” Jeff Williams finished in fourth.

Michael Hood had another great weekend, winning the Amateur Superbike race, battling every lap and every corner with Kingston’s Chris Fehr. The two riders battled race long with Hood finally slipping away in the later stages of the race to take a well-earned win. In third was newcomer Richard Fearing who rode a great race. Aaron Burns took fourth with Kingston rider Steve Cole rebounding from his previous rounds disaster to finish in fifth.

Fehr and Hood went at it all over again in the Amateur 600 Sportbike race. This time Fehr held the early advantage, with Hood in hot pursuit. By the mid-point of the contest, Hood made a brave move in an attempt to take the lead and overshot the back corner, handing the lead and victory to Fehr. Hood recovered quickly however and re-joined the race to finish second ahead to third place finisher Richard Fearing. In fourth was Aaron Burns with Steve Cole again finishing in fifth.

In West City Powersports Lightweight Production action, Jean-Pascal Schroeder jumped into an early lead aboard his Honda CBR250R. After a poor start and some shuffling back, Jared Walker elbowed his Kawasaki 300 forward so he could offer a challenge for the lead and he wasn’t long making good on his promise. Schroeder stayed within striking range of the youngster for most of the race, but could offer no challenge to Walkers drive to the win. Finishing in third was Richard Lee, who bounced back nicely despite a crash in morning practice. Fourth went to Kirk Shergold with Ed Ianni taking fifth.

Racing resumes at Shannonville Motorsport Park on August 5th. to 7th.
