AFM Round 8 Thunderhill Raceway Park Willows, California October 1-2

The final round of the 2011 AFM Formula Pacific championship looked to be a battle of the BMWs, with Chris Siglin tied for the points lead with James Randolph, setting the stage for an exciting showdown. But when the green flag dropped, it was the Dunlop-shod, San Jose Yamaha R1 of Ricky Corey out in front, grabbing the holeshot from the BMWs of Siglin, Randolph, and David Stanton.

Looking strong on his BayAreaRidersForum Racing BMW S1000RR, Siglin charged past Corey on the front straight to take the lead, while Randolph began to lose touch with the front runners on his San Jose BMW S1000RR. After taking some time to study Siglin’s lines, Corey retook the lead and went on to take the win, with Siglin second and Stanton third on his Kyle Racing BMW S1000RR.

In the winner’s circle after the race, Stanton showed his good-humored side by using a heavy European accent to impersonate his friend and fellow competitor, Martin Szwarc.

“VELL YOU KNOW, I GET REALLY HORRIBLE START, AND I SOUGHT – UUUUGH JEEZ, VAT AM I GOING TO DO?” said Stanton, as the crowd erupted in laughter. “I just revved it too high, and the clutch grabbed, and I thought, ‘Oh no, what did I do?'” said Stanton in the winner’s circle. “I figured I’d try to keep them in sight, then then next thing you know I’m passing people, Ricky, Chris and Jimmy are still there, and I thought ‘Hey, this is pretty cool!’ So I just kept my head down, and it took a couple of laps to get by James, he was riding amazingly well. Ricky and Chris were kinda battling there for a while, and it was really fun to watch, it was like watching that IBM machine versus the chess guy, it was like this slow-motion, high-speed game, it was really cool! We made a lot of progress with the BMW this weekend, Kenny Norman worked his butt off – thank you so much! And Pirelli Tires, these things hung in there the whole way, they were amazing!”

Siglin’s second-place finish placed earned him the top spot in the 2011 Formula Pacific Championship.

“I was really worried off the start, I’ll tell you that,” explained Siglin. “I knew these guys were going to bring it today – they always do in Formula Pacific, these guys know how to throw down. My hat is off to James, he was riding hard. I know he’s not on his top equipment right now, but with what he had, he rode a really good race. Ricky has been the benchmark all year, and if it wasn’t me up here, it would probably be him. And Dave, my idol, my hero, it’s really overwhelming right now. I’m just speechless, it’s amazing, almost surreal, I put a lot of pressure on myself, and I just couldn’t be happier with how things turned out. I have to give thanks to Alex Torres and Ray Perez of Fastline Cycles – how about that Fastline power! Fastline rips – and it’s all thanks to Alex and what he does. CT Racing and Pirelli Tires, these guys have been behind me for a few years now, I can’t thank them enough.”

Ricky Corey’s first place finish was his third Formula Pacific win of the season, but a mechanical-induced DNF earlier in the season relegated him to third in the championship points standings.

“When Chris passed me, I realized where I was lacking on the track, a little more so in turn 7 and turn 8,” said Corey. “I was really losing a lot of ground on him there, so I changed my line a little bit, and managed to stay on the throttle a little more, and made a little bit up through there. He was setting an awesome pace, and I didn’t know if I could hang with him for a while, but I felt better on the brakes and was able to make up a lot there. I was able to make the pass, make it stick, then reel off a little bit of a gap before the end – enough to keep a lead down the straight so he couldn’t pass me, it worked out really well. Congrats to Chris for the championship, he ran a great race today. I have to thank my dad and San Jose Yamaha – if anyone wants to buy a Yamaha, they will hook you up.”

Fastline Cycles of Fremont, California Caps Off a Successful 2011 Season with Multiple Championships

Fastline Cycles supported two racers this year, both of whom had excellent seasons. On Sunday, Chris Siglin won the American Federation of Motorcyclists’ #1 plate, and Christie Cooley won the WERA West Women’s Superstock Expert championship, her third championship of the season.

Aboard the Fastline Cycles 2011 BMW S1000RR, this was Siglin’s first Formula Pacific Championship. Tied for points with James Randolph going into the final round, the pressure was intense. “I tried my best not to let it get to me,” said Siglin, “and we went into the weekend with our usual game plan, which was to race our own race and not worry about anyone else.”

After following Randolph and Ricky Corey for a few laps, Siglin caught and passed Randolph, then had to carefully decide how hard to push for a win versus bringing home a championship.

“I wanted to prove a point that I could still win the race even with the pressure of the championship, so I made a pass for the lead using the Fastline power of the BMW. We led for a few laps but made a few small mistakes which let Ricky back by on the last lap. I felt I proved my point to myself and others, so I toned it down and brought it home in 2nd.”

“It was a great and exciting way to end the season, and I’m really proud of my entire crew and sponsors for all the hard work and constant support. I couldn’t have done it without them!”

Siglin would also like to thank other sponsors: CT Racing/Pirelli Tires, Kyle Racing, MotoWheels, Kyle Racing, Motion Pro, Helimot Leathers, Trivalley Moto, Zoom Zoom Trackdays, Thermosman Suspension, Rock Oil, CZ Chains, Suomy Helmets, GoPro, MotoGloss, Ace Custom Graphics, KH Coaching, and all his family and friends.

Also celebrating this weekend was Christie Cooley, on her 2008 Yamaha R6 prepped and built by Fastline Cycles. Cooley was racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway at a double points WERA West weekend, and won Women’s Superstock Expert, wrapping up the WERA West Championship.

Cooley dominated the club racing women’s championships this year. On Saturday, September 10th, she clinched the AFM’s Formula AFemme championship with a win at Thunderhill Raceway, then packed up and headed to California Speedway in Fontana to compete with WERA on Sunday, also winning the WERA West Women’s Superstock Expert race there.

Up next was the final round of the California State Championship at Willow Springs September 17-18. After breaking her motor during Saturday practice, she raced Formula Femme on Nikki Nienow’s 2007 R6 while setting personal best laptimes. Unfortunately, on the fifth lap, an airbox screw fell out and lodged in the throttle bodies, creating the experience of a stuck throttle going into the infamous turn 8.

“It was pretty much the scariest moment of my life,” says Cooley. “Every time I go into turn 8 it’s the scariest moment of my life, but then to have what feels like a stuck throttle at the same time? Ugh! I pulled in the clutch and came in, but I was totally bummed because I was having a great race. Fortunately I was able to finish in third, which was enough points to win the championship.”

With a destroyed cylinder and no time to fix it before the final WERA West round, Fastline Cycles saved the day by prepping another bike, her 2008 R6, and setting it up with her Leo Vince exhaust, aftermarket suspension and other parts. “My bike worked phenomenally well in Vegas, the best it’s been all season.”

Cooley would like to thank Alex of Fastline Cycles, along with Pirelli Tires, CT Racing, Arai Helmets, Leo Vince, ACT Racing, G&B Cycle Pro, Mission City Signs, and teammates and crew Nikki Nienow and Ross Embertson.

Fastline Cycles, located in Fremont, California, offers personalized service for all brands and model years of motorcycles, ATVs and scooters. Fastline also offers expert race tuning services, race engine building, race bike set-up and preparations, and sells fuel, parts and everything you could possibly need for your street or race machines.
