Motorcyclists in Colorado enjoyed a beautiful spring ride while helping kids with brain tumors yesterday. The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation® Ride for Kids® in Golden raised $41,133. The cool dawn temperatures gave way to a warm, sunny morning as the 200 participants met at the Jefferson County Human Services Building. The crowd included six survivors of childhood brain tumors, Tyler, James, Patricia, Ben, Colin and Spencer. Many of these “stars” joined the ride over winding mountain roads into the Front Range, with wide vistas of snow-capped peaks. Back in Golden, they told the fundraisers how much the day meant to them. Ben said he’s planning to start a rescue dog daycare business and will donate his income to pediatric brain tumor research. His mother, Sarah, said, “We are celebrating that Ben is better because of motorcyclists like you. The more advances in research, the better it is for our children. Let’s create a world where 100 percent of our children do not have this disease.” The riders also heard from a pediatric cancer researcher who is also a motorcyclist, Dr. Jean Mulcahy Levy of the University of Colorado. The top fundraisers were: Individual: Pamela McCombs, $8,541 Club/Chapter: GWRRA CO-G, $8,696 Motorcycle Business: Apex Sports, $11,269 Drawing prizes from Ride for Kids® sponsors went to: Sandra Seidell (Honda motorcycle); Ken Off (Dunlop tire); Alvin Green (AGV helmet); Linda Shelley (Tourmaster gift certificate) and Pamela McCombs (Cardo Systems headset). Special thanks went to the volunteers who made the Colorado ride a great event for the kids. This year’s team leaders were Pat and Dave Andrews and Linda Shelley.
