Former AMA Pro Superbike racer James Kerker, his wife Amy, and their six-year-old son Lucas died in a small plane crash June 30 in Loveland, Colorado.

According to several news reports, Kerker and his family were visiting relatives in the Denver, Colorado area with plans to continue to Moab, Utah. Kerker, a former U.S. Air Force pilot according to the Columbus Dispatch, was piloting his own Piper PA 28-235 when it apparently lost power while trying to clear a ridge line near the Continental Divide and crashed in the Loveland Ski Area. None of the three people on board the aircraft survived.

James Kerker lived near Marysville, Ohio, and previously worked for American Honda Research & Development. He raced as a privateer in AMA Pro Superbike for several seasons.
