Tom Milton, brother of former AMA Pro and Willow Springs Motorcycle Club (WSMC) road racer Andy Milton, died during a bicycling event on April 24th. He was 56 years old. Milton, of Fairfield, California, was the mechanic for Andy Milton when Andy graduated from racing with WSMC to the AMA National series in 1995. Andy Milton raced in the 600cc Supersport class until head injuries suffered in a crash at Infineon Raceway (then known as Sears Point Raceway) ended his career. Since then, Tom Milton had developed as a distance bicycle rider, engaging in what are known as “double-century” rides of 200 miles, typically covered in a single day. His death occurred while riding near San Jose, California, during an event known as the Devil Mountain Double. “He had turned into quite the cycling enthusiast, and he had ridden several of these double-centuries,” Andy Milton said. “He was participating in his 52nd double-century, and he was at Mile 134, doing a pretty substantial climb, and his heart stopped.” Tom Milton was found by race officials in a chase vehicle, and while CPR was performed at the scene, rescuers were unable to revive him. An autopsy determined that his death was caused by coronary artery disease, Andy Milton said. Tom Milton is survived by his mother Doris, sisters Marry & Carol, and his brother Andy of Milton’s Competition Motors of Los Angeles.
