The Roadracing World Action Fund has reached $798,402.33 in donations as the “Take Back The AMA” racer safety movement started by John Ulrich celebrates its 10th anniversary with the beginning of the 2011 racing season. In those 10 years, the Roadracing World Action Fund has accomplished its core mission – to help prevent racetrack injuries through education and promoting deployment of soft barriers to improve rider safety. In those 10 years, soft barrier protection has gone from being a little known and often dismissed concept to being the standard for racing safety. Back then, haybales and tires were considered to be adequate padding for hard walls and embankments riders were likely to hit in a crash–soft barriers such as Airfence were thought to be too expensive and too much trouble, and were basically off the radar of many racing organizations and racetrack owners. Educating the public about the value of soft barrier use was accomplished through widespread soft barrier demonstrations and deployment at various racetracks across the U.S. – sponsored by the Roadracing World Action Fund and thanks to donations from the many businesses, manufacturers, friends and families of the motorcycle racing community. Where soft barriers were deployed, injuries were reduced and lives were saved. We are now seeing more soft barriers deployed than ever thought possible at racetracks all over the country, and not just during race weekends but at track days as well.
