Roadracing World Action Fund Reaches $795,585.47 Raised For Airfence Deployment

© 2011, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

The Roadracing World Action Fund has reached a total of $795,584.47 thanks to the creative fundraising efforts by members of the motorcycle community and many individual donors. Of that total, $745,874.50 was designated by donors for road race use and $49,709.97 was designated by donors for dirt track use.

The Roadracing World Action Fund is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization which advocates and promotes the use of soft barriers to help prevent rider injuries at racetracks nationwide.

Strong support from individual contributors included Janet Gunn, who donated $5000, “In memory of Ian Gunn, who died in his bed, and Jimmy Adamo, who didn’t.” Dale Greenwood donated $1000, hoping to see more Airfence put in use at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Leading the pack of repeat contributors is Bob Robbins, who has donated every year since 2005. Robbins’ 2010 contribution of $2000 brings his grand total to $4975. Robbins wrote, “The continuing success of the program and those involved in keeping it going is very much appreciated. Let’s all hope for a safe season on all racing levels.”

Steven Brunton, also a perennial contributor since 2005, brought his grand total to $4450 with his 2010 contribution of $1000.

Others repeat donors included Charles Buse, with seven donations since 2003 for a grand total of $2000 with his 2010 donation of $300; Craig Beardsley, five donations of $75 over three years for a total of $375; and for the second year in a row David Van Ommeren donated $250 for a grand total of $500.

FUNDRAISERS

In addition to the services he provides transporting, deploying and repairing soft barriers, “Airfence Andy” Curro was the driving force behind a major fundraiser this year for the Roadracing World Action Fund. Curro purchased a 2009 Buell 1125R and sold raffle tickets at various events throughout the year, with net proceeds in the amount of $11,751 donated to the Action Fund. Bob Saeger held the winning raffle ticket drawn on Saturday, October 16th, at Homestead-Miami Speedway during the CCS Race of Champions.

The 4th Annual NESBA Blackhawk Farms Chili Cook-Off raised $10,447 for the Action Fund, the largest amount yet. Past events have raised $2276 (2007); $7085.35 (2008); and $5911.26 (2009), for a four-year grand total of $25,719.61. The latest event was held Saturday, September 4, 2010, with 144 people in attendance (plus an after-event donation of $50 mailed in by Kurt Bonigut). In a press release, NESBA Midwest Director Fred Duncan wrote, “I’m just overwhelmed how this small group of people comes together each year and raises this much money for Airfence. I’m proud to be associated with this group and appreciate the efforts of everyone who helped put this together.” Contributing items to the 2010 event’s raffles and auctions were Yoshimura Suzuki, Woodcraft, Yoyodyne, Vesrah, Cox Radiator Guards, Arai, Trackdaystore.com, NESBA, Mike Shinville, John Laconte, and Snap-On of Crystal Lake, Illinois.

Kilroy’s Bar in St. Louis was the location of an impromptu fundraiser hosted by Chris Carr, which included a raffle of Global products, $220; the sale of miscellaneous items, $200; and donations from RK Stratman, Inc., $100, and Willie and Mary Ann Wilcox, $100. A total of $622 was thus added to the Roadracing World Action Fund for Dirt Track soft barriers.

The Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/Pegram Racing Nicky Hayden Autographed Flat Track Number Plate Auction netted $2000 for the Roadracing World Action Fund – Dirt Track. The winning bid was placed by David Pierce of Farmington, Minnesota.

The Lucas Oil Elena Myers Custom Helmet Raffle at Laguna Seca netted $1460 for the Roadracing World Action Fund. Roadracing World staffers and Myers sold raffle tickets at the event, raising $730; Myers’ 2010 sponsor, Lucas Oil, then matched that amount, for a total contribution of $1460.

In December, Elena Myers autographed her Lucas pit shirts and sold them, donating proceeds of $300 to the Roadracing World Action Fund.

The Annual Thanksgiving Weekend Two-Up Fundraiser held during the Fastrack Riders track day event November 27 and 28, 2010, at Auto Club Speedway raised $3800. The two-up rides were available to members of the public with a minimum donation of $50 to the Roadracing World Action Fund. The total included $1000 from Lucas Oil, which offered pre-paid two-up rides as a sales incentive for Lucas employees and the employees of various Lucas vendors and distributors.

Viets Performance contributed $10 for each set of Bridgestone BT-003 race tires and Battlax slicks ordered through August 31, 2010, raising a total of $360 for the Roadracing World Action Fund.

KurveyGirl.com continued its “Got Dzus?” campaign in support of the Roadracing World Action Fund, providing a donation of $3099 for 2010, and bringing its overall total donated since 2006 to $11,606.

In a press release issued by Kurveygirl.com in November, owner Julie Salcido said, “Four years ago, I never thought we would reach the $11,600 mark so quickly. It is great to be able to give back to the racing community through the donations to the Action Fund.” For 2011, KurveyGirl.com will continue the “Got Dzus?” program, which has expanded to a $1 Donation for each item purchased from KurveyGirl.com.
