The UtahSBA held Round 3 of its Utah Motorcycle Law Masters of the Mountains Race Series on Saturday, June 20th on Utah Motorsports Campus’ East Track.
During Round 3 the UtahSBA was thrilled to welcome riders from a large selection of western states including Washington, California, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, and Montana. Traveling racers have always made up a huge portion of UtahSBA’s membership but with cancellation of neighboring race rounds, the UtahSBA saw a substantial increase in visiting reciprocity riders during this round.
The summer solstice racing day started off with a bang as Moto Station and AZ Riding Academy King of the Mountain (KOM) Qualifying took to the track along with practice group A. Given the early start time most riders bided their time waiting for the second qualifying window in hopes of warmer track temperatures. Undeterred by the nippy asphalt, Kory Cowan and Brian Childree put in solid 1:38.185 and 1:39.865 times respectively in the opening session. Qualifying number 2 had a much larger turnout, with a huge swath of the KOM field driving lap times below the 1:39 mark. Adam Robarts, fresh off his KOM victory during Round 2, put his newly constructed Suzuki GSX-R1000 to work and took pole position with a 1:36.319, followed closely by Kory Cowan and his very sparkly R6 with a 1:36.653 and Genaro Lopez on his Beemer in 3rd with a 1:37.667.
Racing went hot with the Modern Vintage GTO/GTU race. With Round 2 GTO winner David Meyer turning his motor into a paperweight during Friday’s APEX Trackday, fresh battles for podium glory were anticipated. As the lights went out Kevin Dolan, Rick Squires, and James Kling blasted through turn 1 and quickly emerged as the front runners for the race. Dolan put his head down and coaxed his Kawasaki ZX-10R up to speed and handily gapped Squires and Kling. Kling kept Squires very busy, eventually sneaking past Squires for the lead during lap 3. Squires, however, was not finished and put his Honda CBR1000RR back in front of Kling’s Ducati 1198 during lap 5 and asserted his lead over Kling for the last 1.5 laps. The race finished as it started with Dolan in first followed by Squires and Kling. In the GTU field 1st place honors went to visiting MRA racer Stephen Townsend followed by Grant Cowan and Phil O’Bryan.
The King of the Mountain combined race started like a motorcycle stunt show, with several of the racers riding wild wheelies all the way to turn 1. After making it through the off-camber turn 1, Robarts, Kory Cowan, and Lopez emerged as the clear leaders with Lopez nipping at Cowan’s heels through most of lap 1. Lopez made short work of Cowan, going through on him in Clubhouse corner near the end of the first lap. Lopez quickly set his sights on Robarts and his newly built Suzuki. Lopez was persistent in his efforts making a solid attempt to get around Robarts on the outside of Tooele turn during lap 2. The rabbit and hound chase persisted driving them further from Cowan, opening a decent gap by lap 9. As this was happening 2019 KOM champion Jerry Hicks caught and overtook Cowan during lap 10 but the spread from Hicks to the lead group at this point was too great to be overcome. Robarts and Lopez continued their game well into the 13th lap with Robarts finally opening up a decent lead as they worked their way through lapped riders. Lopez fought hard to reclose the gap but in the end it was Robarts with Lopez trailing by just 0.292 seconds and Hicks taking 3rd a few seconds later.
The rest of the day was composed of numerous hard fought races. Moto 2 included two solid photo finishes, the first between Cowan and Hicks for fighting for first place with Hicks finishing just .223 seconds behind Cowan. The second being a .044 gap between Grant Boldt and Ryan Richardson for 4th place. Novice GTO featured a rematch between Squires and Kling with the younger Kling prevailing by just .13 seconds.
Overall it was a great day with only one racing incident that led both riders into turn one’s gravel trap during the Open Superstock race where they tipped over due to the depth of the gravel. The weather was pretty unremarkable compared to Round 2 with temps high enough to keep the asphalt hot but not hot enough to cook the riders or their bikes.
As the race day ended participants in the Advanced Rider Training (ART) course took to the track for an evening session following an awesome afternoon of classroom sessions and parking lot drills. By all accounts the course was a great success with smiles lasting well past the sun setting over the Stansbury Mountains to the west.
The UtahSBA is heading into “summer break” following Round 3 and will return in 4 weeks with Round 4 on UMC’s West Track on Saturday July 25th.
