Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden narrowly beat his teammate Jamie Hacking to take his second consecutive AMA Supersport victory at Daytona International Speedway. Roger Hayden and Hacking broke away from the rest of the field early and ran nose-to-tail for much of the 22-lap race. On the final lap, Hacking had one slight bobble in the infield, and that was enough for Roger Hayden to hold on for the win. Hacking finished second, while Yoshimura Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden pulled away from a multi-rider battle late in the race to claim the final podium position. Ben Spies finally broke through the gates of Gatorade Victory Lane at Daytona International Speedway winning the Superstock event on Thursday while Kawasaki’s Roger Lee Hayden outlasted his teammate Jamie Hacking to win the Supersport. Spies broke away from Yamaha’s Ben Bostrom and M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May to win by a margin of 2.861 seconds. It was his first career AMA victory at “The World Center of Racing.” The Longview, Texas native earned his fourth career Superstock victory and the 15th Daytona Superstock victory for Suzuki. “We’ve always been so close at Daytona,” Spies said. “It feels good to finally get one.” Spies’ work at DIS is not done yet. He will start from the pole in Saturday’s AMA Superbike Opening Round, which will start at 11:15 a.m. “I definitely want to win on the Superbike,” Spies said. “I’m back as the champion and that’s important. It’s not going to be an easy race to win, but the pressure is going to be lifted a little bit, having won here. The Superbike race is a totally different deal, and I’m not really worried about it right now. I’m just happy to get a race win for Suzuki in Superstock.” In Thursday’s finale in the Supersport, Roger Lee Hayden and Jamie Hacking were able to break away from the field in the 22-lap event. On the last lap, Hacking was setting Hayden for a late pass but Hayden was able to break away to hold onto the victory. “My only thought in my head was to do the best last lap I did all day,” Hayden said of the last lap. “I felt pretty good that last lap.” The Daytona Supersport victory was Roger Lee Hayden’s second straight and he now joins Miguel Duhamel as the only back-to-back winners in the event. For Hacking, it was his fourth Daytona Supersport runner-up finish and sixth overall Daytona runner-up finish. “It’s hard to run down a motorcycle that is as fast as yours,” said Hacking, who slipped up on the last lap and lost some momentum. Rounding out the podium was Tommy Hayden, who is in his first season with Yoshimura Suzuki. More, from a press release issued by Dunlop: Dunlop Motorcycle Tires race report: 2007 AMA Superbike Series, round one, Daytona International Speedway Daytona, Fl. — March 8, 2007 — The 2007 AMA Superbike Championship Series kicked off in dazzling form today as Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies took his first-ever win at Daytona International Speedway (DIS) on a Superstock-spec GSX-R1000 and Kawasaki Road Racing’s Roger Lee Hayden nabbed his second consecutive Supersport win at DIS on a ZX-6R. Spies, coming off his 2006 Superbike championship-winning season, started 2007 where he left off last fall with a record-setting 1:38.355 pole position time on Wednesday afternoon. Out of Superstock competition since 2004, Spies’ qualifying performance came on a Dunlop N-Tec™ rear tire and smashed the previous year’s mark by 1.776 seconds. In the race, Spies sped to the front and held the position until lap four. Spies then followed the M4 Emgo Suzuki of Geoff May until lap 10, when he passed May at the start-finish line and sped away to a comfortable 2.86 second win. Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Ben Bostrom, who ran a close third for most of the race, took over second on lap 11 and finished in that position. “I can’t say enough about the Dunlop tires,” said Spies. “That’s why I could do a :38 in qualifying and a pretty quick lap late in the race.” Indeed, Spies’ fastest lap of 1:39.089 came on the 12th circuit of the 13-lap competition. His win was the fourth Superstock victory of his career and the 15th for Suzuki at DIS. It was also a very good showing for Dunlop, whose riders snagged six of the top 10 finishing positions. Superstock Results: Dunlop finishers in the Top 10 1. Ben Spies – Suzuki 2. Ben Bostrom – Yamaha 4. Aaron Yates – Suzuki 5. Danny Eslick – Suzuki 7. Blake Young – Suzuki 10. John Haner – Suzuki Roger Lee Hayden’s .369-second Supersport triumph led a Dunlop podium sweep as teammate Jamie Hacking and Yoshimura Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden finished second and third, respectively””the identical finishing order from 2006. Roger Lee trailed Hacking (last year’s class champion and the pole-sitter with a time of 141.801) for the first three laps but when he took the lead on lap four he was unchallenged to the end of the 22-lap affair. “I could see Jamie, I could see his shadow on every lap going into turn one,” said Hayden of his 12th career Supersport victory. “The team did an awesome job, my Dunlop tires were great today.” While Hacking was never more than a half-second back, Tommy Hayden, Roger Lee’s older brother, had to fight his way through a pack of riders from as far back as eighth position. In the process he set the fastest lap of the race on his N-Tec tire with a time of 141.946. Overall, Dunlop’s riders took five of the top 10 positions. Supersport Results: Dunlop finishers in the Top 10 1. Roger Lee Hayden – Kawasaki 2. Jamie Hacking (Kawasaki) 3. Tommy Hayden (Suzuki) 5. Josh Hayes (Honda) 8. Chaz Davies (Yamaha) The series takes a breather on Friday as the AMA Supercross series queues up for the day’s entertainment. The road racing action resumes Saturday as Spies begins the defense of his Superbike title and Honda Racing’s Miguel Duhamel the Daytona 200 pole-sitter — goes for a record sixth Daytona 200 victory running in the Formula Xtreme class. More, from a press release issued by Pirelli: Thursday’s AMA Formula Xtreme practice at Daytona International Speedway had Steve Rapp at the top of the time sheets on his Team Attack Kawasaki ZX-6R. Rapp’s time of 1:42.343 was set using 16.5-inch Diablo Superbike Slicks, in a standard race compound, which were the same specs he used during qualifying for the Daytona 200. In Formula Xtreme qualifying, Michael Barnes was the fastest Pirelli rider, earning fifth on the Daytona 200’s grid, with his Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600. Attack Kawasaki teammates Steve Rapp and Ben Attard qualified ninth and tenth, respectively, with privateers Cory West and Barrett Long setting the 12th and 13th fastest times on their Yamaha YZF-R6s. The battle for the win in the AMA Superstock race was between Geoff May, on his Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slick-shod Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R1000, and Ben Spies. May led six of the race’s 13 laps. By race end the podium was overloaded with Bens, a Bostrom joining in, with Geoff May earning third place on the podium. Finishing a fantastic sixth was Pirelli-rider Chris Ulrich, after recovering from a forced off-track ride on the first lap. The Supersport race had five Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa riders finishing in the top ten. Michael Barnes took fourth for the M4 EMGO Suzuki team, with Ben Attard and Steve Rapp getting sixth and seventh for Attack Kawasaki, while Barnes’ teammate Geoff May took ninth and Team Hunter racer Cory West finished tenth. Barnes, May, and West each ran in third during the race, with West providing additional entertainment by falling, never letting go of his bike, remounting and continuing on, adding less than 30 seconds to his lap time. West, 2004 Superbike Rookie of the Year, is again showing his full promise on his Chuck Giacchetto tuned Yamaha. The Daytona 200 gets the green flag on Saturday at 2:00 pm, with Pirelli showing its best chance of taking the race win.
