OXFORD, NC (April 5, 2011) Greg Neal has dedicated his quest to break his own land speed motorcycle record to bring attention to the plight of our nation’s Wounded Warriors. Neal currently holds the land speed record for a normally aspirated 650cc motorcycle at 190.118 mph, set in August 2009 on a 2006 Kawasaki ZX6RR. Like drag racing, land speed competition features a standing start with the top speed determined through a set of timing lights near the finish. That record came at the 1.5-mile course in Limestone, Maine, site of his scheduled world record attempt July 16-17. “If the stars and the moon line up right and the weather conditions are right, we’ll get the record,” Neal says. “Setting world records is the way I draw attention to the Wounded Warrior Project.” The Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) is an organization that honors and empowers injured servicemen and women live as normal a life as possible. Country singer Wynonna Judd is a big supporter of Wounded Warriors. Neal solicits donations to Wounded Warriors depending on his top speed at every event. He retired after 21 years service in the Navy and has focused on his racing career and charity work since. Through Facebook, Neal met Monty Spears, another military veteran and CEO of Run 1 Racing Motorsports (www.run1racingmotorsports.com, which now is a supporting sponsor of Neal’s land speed team, TLN Motorsports (www.tlnmotorsports.com). “Once we started talking through Facebook, we discovered we had a lot in common,” Neal sys. “We developed a friendship and an appreciation for what each other has done. I am thankful for the support Monty and Run 1 Racing has given me.” Run 1 Racing, which fields four riders in AMA Pro Racing and WERA events, also supports the Wounded Warrior Project. “Guys like Greg figure out a way to give back,” Spears says. “You’ve got to respect a guy that throws his leg over a missile for nothing more than glory and a cause. It’s the same story throughout history; it’s why we have the technology we’ve got. Someone pushed the envelope to find the limit to what’s possible. Our sport, AMA Pro Racing, is the same; men and women pushing it to the limit. I respect everyone that dares to try, dares to exceed their own limits. That’s how you get faster.” Neal has been racing motorcycles for 12 years and currently holds 28 land speed records, including the one-mile course speed record at 184.181 mph aboard his Kawasaki ZX6RR. The primary sanctioning organization for land speed racing is the Loring Timing Association (http://lta-lsr.com/default.aspx). Neal has topped 200 mph twice, but did not produce the required backup time to get credit for a record. His top speed is 203.965 aboard his normally aspirated 2008 Kawasaki ZX-10R. Neal opened the 2011 season in Maxton April 2-3 under less than desired weather conditions. He made only four total passes, sanctioned by the ECTA (East Coast Timing Association) www.ecta-lsr.com. The best pass was on the ZX-10R Sunday. “It was really pulling hard across the top,” Neal said, “but we hit the limiter about 100 feet before the traps and ended up with a speed of 197.762 mph. It was easily a 200-201 mph pass if we had the right gear. Disappointing, but encouraging. We know the basic gear set up for the bikes on the mile and 1.5 mile. We now know the max power shift points for all the gears on both bikes. With no chance to test we used the race weekend to see where all the off season changes left us, what we needed to do for maximum performance. It was not a record breaking weekend, but a step in the right direction.” Neal will return to Maxton on May 14th-15th. “We will be shooting for 178+ on the ZX-6RR and 201+ on the ZX-10R. It will be just another step leading us to July in Maine.”
