Ryan Burke continues winning streak at High Plains Raceway

Byers, CO – The MRA continued its championship series at High Plains Raceway (North Course) over the weekend of August 6-7. As a result of unseasonably cool and dry conditions, several records were set during a number of epic battles on this 1.86 mile track.

Several lap records were set on Saturday with Zach Hill blazing a 1:17.299 in Amateur GTU, Wyeth Jackson doing a 1:17.567 in Formula 40 GTU, Shannon Moham ripping a 1:15.369 in Heavyweight Supersport and a 1:16.943 in Heavyweight Endurance, Ryan Burke busting off a 1:14.574 in Middleweight Supersport, Jay Samarjian posting 1:18.232 in Novice GTU, and Mike Surratt clearing 1:26.108 in UltraLightweight Endurance. On Sunday, Moham was able to set the Supertwins GTO record to a new level of 1:16.530.

During Race of the Rockies qualifying, Ryan Burke took pole position on his Yamaha R1M with a 1:12.657 followed closely by Oleg Pianykh who put up a 1:12.924. Ricky Orlando rounded out the front row with a 1:15.054 with Shannon Moham claiming the top Race of Rockies GTU time of 1:15.908.

At the start of Race of the Rockies GTO, Pianykh took the holeshot followed by Orlando and Burke bringing up 3rd. They remained that way for a couple of laps before Burke took both Pianykh and Orlando on lap 3. From there, Burke set sail and established a multi second lead which was never challenged. Pianykh was able to keep Orlando off of his tail for the remainder of the race.

Race of the Rockies GTU saw Moham take the holeshot, but on lap 3 in turn 4s he uncharacteristically lost the bike and crashed out. That left Brian Dobrowolski, Tim Mayhew, Jon Glaefke, and Jackson to battle for the GTU podium. Dobrowolski proved to be the quicker of the GTU field and cut consistent 1:17 lap times to claim the win. Wyeth Jackson charged through the field to get by Mayhew dipping into the 1:16 range. Unfortunately, Jackson didn’t have time to catch Dobrowolski so she finished in the second spot with Mayhew filling out the last podium position. With Moham’s unfortunate incident, the Race of the Rockies GTU points tightened with now four competitors with mathematical chances to claim the championship.

Recently the MRA lost one of our long time racers, Mike Hellerstedt to a battle with cancer. On Sunday the entire paddock, many spectators, and Mike’s closest friends took part in a memorial lap around HPR to commemorate the camaraderie Mike brought to the club.

The MRA travels to Pueblo Motorsports Park for the next round of sprint races on August 27-28. The SuperStreet program will be included for the Pueblo race weekend. For more information, see http://www.mra-racing.org/superstreet/superstreet-information/
