Burke, Fillmore battle for MRA Race of the Rockies GTO, Moham dominates Race of the Rockies GTU
Byers, CO – High Plains Raceway again hosted the MRA race series over the weekend of August 5-6, which this time included the annual 4-hour endurance race and the second round of the Intermountain Championship Series held in conjunction with the Utah Sport Bike Association.
On Saturday, the annual 4-hour endurance went off without a hitch. Of all the teams, Team Quickcycles set the pace early and never looked back. At the end, they completed 111 laps which was 5 laps ahead of second place Team Grease. In the Titanium Butt category (solo endurance), Louden David continued his winning streak by completing 102 laps by himself, which was only one lap more than Aaron Tritt.
Sunday Race of the Rockies saw the return of KTM racer Chris Fillmore to the MRA grids. Chris has been to HPR a couple of times in the past and mentioned that HPR is one of his favorite tracks. At the start of Race of the Rockies, the paddock emptied out to trackside in anticipation of a battle between reigning champion Ryan Burke and Fillmore.
From the start, Fillmore and Burke battled for the lead with Burke getting the better of Fillmore with the power of his Yamaha R1, while Fillmore using the agility of his KTM 1290 Super Duke R to get by Burke in the technical areas of HPR. As Burke later wrote in his Facebook blog, his bike had developed an electronic problem just before he took the track for Race of the Rockies, so he needed to ride “old school” style as he called it. Just past the halfway mark, it seemed that Burke had adapted to his R1’s new behavior and was able to hold off Fillmore in the back sections. Although both riders were turning almost identical lap times, Burke opened up just enough daylight to hold off Fillmore and take the win. Ryan Burke is supported by Imperial Sportbikes, Mark Schellinger from YCRS, Geoff Cesmat, Dunlop Tires, Boulder Motorsports, and all of his family. Chris Fillmore rides for KTM/HMC, Shoei, Alpinestars, Shimano, Eyball, 100%, Skullcandy, and Troy Lee Designs.
In Race of the Rockies GTU, Shannon Moham got a great start and was never challenged in the GTU class. Moham rode his Yamaha YZF-R6 to consistent 1:50 lap times on the 2.55 mile circuit only backing off about a second later in the race. Shannon Moham is sponsored by Nordic Nursing, Dunlop tires, Race Tech suspension, Woodcraft CFM, K&N Filters, Vortex, GPR dampers, Lockhart Phillips, Vickery Motorsports, Motors by REX, Renegade race fuels, Pit Bull stands, Imperial Sportbikes, Denver n Dakota, Segren’s Nectar, MOM, and Falicon crankshafts.
Next up on the MRA race calendar is Pikes Peak International Raceway over the weekend of August 26-27. The Superstreet program will return for this round enabling street riders to get a sample of racing. More details are available at http://www.mra-racing.org/superstreet/superstreet…
The Motorcycle Roadracing Association is dedicated to promoting safe and competitive motorcycle road racing events for enthusiasts in Colorado and the surrounding area. For more information go to http://www.mra-racing.org/.
