Burke flies to win MRA Race of the Rockies, Moham captures Race of the Rockies GTU track record

Fountain, CO, August 28, 2017 – The MRA championship series returned to Pikes Peak International Raceway during August 26-27 for round 6 of the 2017 season. PPIR is a short track built using most of the tri-oval and covering just 1.3 miles per lap with sub minute lap times being typical for most big bike classes.

Earlier on Sunday, Open Superbike saw Ray Thornton get the hole shot and lead for about half of the race while being closely followed by Ryan Burke while both turning lap time in the high 0:56 range. On lap 6, Burke was able to get by Thornton and hold the lead through the finish. This was to be the setup for Race of the Rockies later in the day.

Thornton got a bad start for Race of the Rockies and had to work his way up through the field, finally getting by Brad Morris, Brad Hendry, to establish himself in second. By this time, Ryan Burke had disappeared. Burke said later his strategy for the race was to put his head down from the start and see if he could shake off the competition. That he did with a series of low 0:56 lap times. Lap 2 was Burke’s best lap where he narrowly missed the overall track record (currently held by Pete Tabor) by 0.045 second! During the last third of the race, Burke went into tire conservation mode and eased the pace by a second, hitting the mid 0:57 range.

During the early laps of the race, Hendry was able to keep Thornton and Morris at bay until some rear grip issues finally caused Hendry to lose about 0.6 seconds per lap. Morris wasn’t able to hunt down Thornton but did keep the final box position.

Race of the Rockies GTU (held concurrently with the GTO class), saw Shannon Moham take a commanding lead from the start and never look back. On lap 5, Moham claimed the GTU class lap record with a 0:57.732 time.

The battle of the day came in the form of Sean Thomas, Ken Yee, and Niles Gourlie. Thomas narrowly held second for most of the race while Yee and Gourlie swapped position for third behind Thomas. On lap 14, Yee got by Thomas for a couple of lap but Thomas was able to cut one of his best times of the race to retake second at the finish.

Ryan Burke is supported by Imperial Sportbikes, Mark Schellinger from YCRS, Geoff Cesmat, Dunlop Tires, Boulder Motorsports, and all of his family.

Shannon Moham is sponsored by Nordic Nursing, Dunlop tires, Race Tech suspension, Woodcraft CFM, K&N Filters, Vortex, GPR dampers, Lockhart Phillips, Vickery Motorsports, Motors by REX, Renegade race fuels, Pit Bull stands, Imperial Sportbikes, Denver n Dakota, Segren’s Nectar, MOM, and Falicon crankshafts.

The MRA heads back to High Plains Raceway (North Course configuration) over the weekend of September 16-17. The Superstreet program will be included on Saturday giving street riders a chance to sample real racing. More details are available at http://www.mra-racing.org/superstreet/superstreet…

The Motorcycle Roadracing Association is dedicated to promoting safe and competitive motorcycle road racing events for enthusiasts in Colorado and the surrounding area. For more information go to http://www.mra-racing.org/.
