Byers, CO – Ryan Burke continued to use his Vickery Sponsored Yamaha R1M to decimate the MRA open bike classes during Round 5 August 8-9 at High Plains Raceway. On Saturday, Burke handily won Open Supersport and followed that up by setting the Open Solo Endurance class track record at a 1:48.264. On Sunday, Burke left the field behind while winning Open Superbike and, after a first lap pass of Dan Turner, wasn’t challenged for the lead in the 14 lap Race of the Rockies GTO. In addition to Vickery Motorsports, Burke is sponsored by Performance Friction Brake Pads, Motul Oil, Dan, Kathy and the rest of the Burke family.
Coming off of a lowside crash during round 4, Dan Turner took 2nd behind Burke in Open Superbike and Race of the Rockies. After the race, Dan mentioned that early in the race, he was trying to get back up to the lead, but Burke was setting a pace that was too much to overcome. Dan is sponsored by Wild Cheetah Racing, Tri-City Cycles, Dunlop, EBC, Silkolene, Air Tech, Regina, Penske, STM Suspension, Tucker Rocky, Vickery Motorsports, Rex & Adam.
The major battle in Race of the Rockies GTO occurred for the final podium position. Ricky Orlando and Ray Thornton fought back and forth for the entire race with often not more than a wheel distance between them. The fans were treated to some excellent displays of racecraft as Ray defended the inside line on turns 10 and 13 while Ricky exploited his high speed corner abilities in turns 4 and 6. At the end, Ricky took over the lead on the final lap, Ray tried an inside move in turn 6, but said later that he wasn’t going to be able to get it done cleanly and settled for 4th behind Orlando’s 3rd. Race of the Rockies GTU saw some new faces on the top podium positions. An injured Shannon Moham experienced a couple of mishaps during the race which opened the door for his competitors to take away some points. Nyles Gourlie saw his first ever win in Race of the Rockies GTU followed by Jon Glaefke in 2nd and Chris Coonshead in 3rd making his first appearance on the Race of the Rockies GTU podium. Gourlie is sponsored by Roanco Sprinklers, Staman Suzuki, Speedin’ Motorsports, Factoryeffex, Woodcraft, Brown Supers, 406 Racing and Michelin. Glaefke is sponsored by Boulder Motorsports, Motorex Oil, Dunlop, Woodcraft/CFM, Ferodo, and Street & Competition. Also notable were yet more track records set for the High Plains full course. Jason Madama set the 400 Production Cup record at 2:07.237, Adam Ayers set the Amateur GTU record at 1:52.370, Luke Johnston set the Modern Vintage GTO record at 1:51.962, Chris Coonshead set the Modern Vintage GTU record at 1:54.948, and Wyeth Jackson set a pair of track records; Formula 40 GTU at 1:53.929 and Ladies of the Rockies at 1:55.324.
