Spring Brings Renewed Emphasis on Motorcycle Safety: SLCC’s Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Event

Spring marks the return of motorcycle-friendly weather, and Salt Lake Community College’s Motorcycle Rider Training program wants to help motorcycle riders and non-riders alike avoid accidents and bring a renewed emphasis on keeping riders safe. May is Motorcycle Awareness and Safety Month, and the College is hosting a free event at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus’ training site on May 3, 8-4 p.m. at 4600 South Redwood Road.

Beginner, intermediate and advanced rider sample courses will be offered, along with access to motorcycle gear vendors, music and food. Training is a critical component to rider safety, as 92 percent of all motorcycle accidents involve riders who did not receive formal training. Utah Highway Safety will also be showing police motor squad demos throughout the day.

“Even those who don’t ride motorcycles can benefit from coming,” said Dan Terry, Motorcycle Rider Education instructor at SLCC. “Everyone can learn about why drivers have difficulties seeing buses, trains and bikers, and the trainers will be providing tips about how motorists and riders can be more aware of each other.”

The May 3 event is co-sponsored by 103.5 The Arrow, Auto-Owners Insurance, Banasky Insurance, Harrison Eurosports, and Utah Bike Law. For more information about the event, review what apparel to bring if planning to participate in a sample rider course, or view a list of participating vendors, visit utahmotorcycletraining.com or call 801-957-5200.

Salt Lake Community College Motorcycle Rider Training Program is a public, open-access, comprehensive motorcycle rider education provider, serving the riding community in Utah. Its mission is to provide quality lifelong learning in motorcycle safety to students of diverse cultures, abilities and ages while fulfilling the needs of community and government agencies, businesses and motorcycle industry, using curriculum established by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the State of Utah.
