WERA West Sportsman Series Presented by Lucas Oil Products

Auto Club Speedway, Fontana, CA

Corey Sarros took the lead at the start, avoided the mad battle for second behind him and ran away with the Formula One race at the WERA West Sportsman Series Presented by Lucas Oil Products season-opener on Sunday, January 24 at Auto Club Speedway.

Riding a Pirelli-shod, Shades of Vail-backed Suzuki GSX-R1000, Sarros turned a best lap of 1:30.352 on his way to a 15.846-second margin of victory after six laps of the 2.36-mile circuit. Behind him, after a fearsome battle for second in the opening laps, came Steve Zoumaras on a Kawasaki ZX-10R, who led Yamaha YZF-R1-mounted Neill Herbert across the line by 2.683 seconds.

Sam Verdarico took his Yamaha YZF-R1 to fourth, ahead of Jeff Stern on a Honda CBR1000RR and Sahar Zvik on a Kawasaki ZX-10R. Jay Millhiser, Christopher Carron, Scott Tillery and Michael Weir completed the top 10.

Sarros also led from start to finish in the A Superstock race, capping off a perfect defense of his WERA West titles from 2015. But the Superstock race was not nearly the runaway that the Formula One contest was, as Sarros’ margin was only 3.085 seconds at the line. And Verdarico actually turned the fastest lap of the race – a 1:30.403 – on his way to a 10.564 second gap over Terry Heard, who took his Kawasaki ZX-10R to third. Verdarico also headed home Zoumaras and Herbert in the A Superbike race.

MotoAmerica regular Benny Solis Jr. took the wins in the C Superbike and C Superstock races on his Honda CBR600RR, in each case ahead of the battling Tuned Racing teammates of Bryce Prince and Jason Aguilar on their Yamaha YZF-R6s. In each race, Prince came out ahead of Aguilar, but the margin was 0.094 seconds in the C Superbike race and an even narrower 0.074 seconds in the C Superstock contest.
