Former 500cc Grand Prix World Champion Kevin Schwantz will be testing a Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbike and Suzuki’s prototype factory MotoGP racebike Tuesday and Wednesday at Circuit of The Americas (COTA).
“When I heard these guys [Suzuki MotoGP team] were testing,” at COTA, Schwantz told Roadracingworld.com Monday, “I called Yoshimura and said. ‘Can I have a Superbike for a couple of days? I want to test in Austin when the MotoGP guys are here.’”
Schwantz said the goal was to help him prepare for the Suzuka 8 Hours FIM Endurance World Championship race in July, which Schwantz plans to do on a Yoshimura (Japan) Suzuki GSX-R1000.
“I felt like I did a lot to get ready for the [Suzuka] eight-hour last year except ride a big bike,” said Schwantz, who co-rode with Yukio Kagayama and Noriyuki Haga to third place in the 2013 Suzuka 8 Hours. “I raced 600s a lot, but I don’t think that’s beneficial. Yeah, it gets you right and it gets you good, but this is different. All the important stuff [about riding a Superbike] is different. So I’m going to do my best to only ride big bikes from here on out.”
One of the other “big bikes” Schwantz plans to ride is Suzuki’s MotoGP racebike, which Randy De Puniet and Nobuatsu Aoki will be testing at COTA on Tuesday and Wednesday, one of nine tests Suzuki has planned this season.
“I get to play on it some tomorrow and a little more on Wednesday. I’m looking forward to it,” said Schwantz. “Hopefully, the ride on Wednesday will be a little more than playing around at lunch. Hopefully, I’ll get an hour or two on it. We’ll see. I’d like to think I’d be able to ride it and give them some feedback, but I’ve got a Superbike to ride as well. That’s going to keep me busy.”
