Jensen Wins Race of the Rockies & 4-Hour Endurance

MRA Round 5 was held at High Plains Raceway July 30 & 31 under hot but sunny conditions. This weekend welcomed the 2nd Annual MRA 4-Hour Endurance Race, and saw riders hailing from California to Oklahoma on the grid. 23 endurance teams and 38 solo riders entered this year, competing for cash purses from Imperial Sportbikes and ABATE of Colorado.

On Saturday morning the 4-Hour Endurance Race was to be gridded via qualifying session. Thus the eventual race winners, Team Dougie Bobby & Friends, sent AMA privateer Scott Jensen out to claim pole position. In the solo category AFM racer Chris Siglin was cutting fast qualifying laps on his big BMW S1000RR, as was AMA privateer Josh Galster. The start saw 22 rows of bikes gridded up in three waves, with Siglin holeshotting. Doug Kahl was close behind, with Mike Applegate and Mike Applehans giving chase. As the 40 minute mark approached solo and team riders began to pit. This race format permits “Pony Express” teams, who hand off the transponder to the next bike in order. Some teams raced traditionally on one bike, with the rider exchange and refuel happening on hot pit, others transferred the transponder from bike to bike and ripped back onto the track. Solo riders took short breaks for water and fuel, and then headed back out to continue their four hour grind.

By the first hour mark Team Dougie Bobby & Friends had managed to accumulate a one minute twenty-two second lead, when suddenly the red flag flew. Officials announced the race would be restarted in running order, and all time advantages were lost. After a frantic team conference, DB&F sent Kahl back out to put his head down and attempt to regain time. Jensen was qued up for the next leg, and the crew member manning the pit board instructed the riders to run a hard pace. Among the top 5 teams, Pink Snappers Too and Cosa Nostra were running quick lap times and make clean pit stops, but it was Taste of Philly that was the surprise of the day. Although Philly had just Mike Applegate and Martin Garvey comprising their pony express team, they were turning a blistering pace running in 2nd place. This despite their lackadaisical pit stops and seeming lack of race strategy, with lone crewman Travis Graham attempting to wrangle the riders as they pitted. On the last lap of the race Taste of Philly’s GSX-R1000 abruptly cut out and came to a halt on the front straight, right in front of pit lane. Breaking the rule that states only a race official may return a transponder from a downed bike, Philly handed the transponder over the wall and onto the next bike to complete the race. That infraction penalized them with the loss of a lap, but they were still able to finish the four hour race in a remarkable 3rd place. Team Dougie Bobby & Friends took the win, Pink Snappers Too in 2nd, Cosa Nostra in 4th and Team Spiny Echidna rounded out 5th place for the last cash payout position.

In the Solo category Josh Galster ran a long fast four hours to claim 1st place, with Doug Goodwin and Jarret Scarberry finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Notably 13-year-old young gun Spencer Russell rode the entire four hours solo, finishing in 7th place.

On Sunday points leader Shane Turpin and the Boulder Motor Sports 1198R rocketed into the lead of Race of the Rockies, followed closely by Dalton Dimick and Chris Siglin, both aboard BMW S1000RR’s. Moto-Garage’s Scott Jensen had qualified his GSX-R1000 on pole for this race, but came around the first two laps waving his hands to indicate a problem. Colter Dimick, Rob Christman and Dan Turner were grouped tightly behind the leaders as Jensen was losing touch. Siglin’s pace had been brutally fast all weekend, and he and Turpin were already turning class record times as Jensen seemed to recover from his early lap issues. As Jensen began to work his way back through the grid, Turpin upped the pace yet again to break away from Siglin. Meanwhile Turner began to reel in Siglin with Christman trailing them, and Galster was in a fierce battle with both Dimick brothers behind. Slowly Jensen caught Turner, then Siglin, then put his head down and began to gain on race leader Turpin. As both riders broke through the class track record times, Jensen finally caught Turpin in tight turn 8, sliding the bike sideways in an inside pass. Jensen kept his head down and proceeded to pull a big lead to the checkers, with Turpin finishing in a comfortable 2nd and Siglin rounding out the podium. Jensen set a new class track record in the race, and during his interview explained that the slipper clutch had failed on the start and he almost elected to pit. Instead he brought home a second win for the weekend, thanking his sponsors Moto-Garage, Dunlop, Sol Performance and EBC.

Round 6 will be August 27 & 28 at High Plains Raceway.
