Former Superbike World Champion, five-time winner of the Daytona 200 and SPEED TV commentator Scott Russell broke his left arm when he crashed the SGA Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 he was riding during a practice session Thursday at Daytona International Speedway. “When I turned into Turn One everything was fine,” Russell told Roadracingworld.com. “When I went to the throttle I knew I was on a new tire. It was about the fourth lap out. As soon as I went to the throttle the back end passed the front. As it turns out we had a little bit of a water leak, and over the top I went. “I tried to break my fall and broke my wrist, broke my arm, actually, just below the plates that I have in there from the 2001 crash I had here. So it broke it right below that, just one of the bones, the one on the inside [radius]. It looks like it’s in a good spot, so it shouldn’t need surgery or anything. And my [left] foot took a beating. They said nothing’s broken, but it feels different. We’ll be alright, but it’s a bummer. I was looking forward to riding this weekend.” Russell’s crew said a bolt blocking off an unused water pump bypass line connection backed out, allowing water to leak out into the bellypan and onto the bike’s rear tire, causing the crash. Russell and Dale Kieffer teamed up on a SGA Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 to win the Mediumweight Superbike category (and finish third overall) in the WERA National Endurance Championship four-hour race September 10 at Barber Motorsports Park. Russell turned the second-fastest lap of that race, just 0.002-second slower than Chris Clark’s 1:30.667.
