Relentless Suzuki’s Alastair Seeley took his third double win of the Fuchs Silkolene British Supersport Championship at Donington Park last weekend as he continues to close the point deficit to fierce title rival Ben Wilson and is now 36 points adrift with five races remaining. Seeley had secured pole position for the Sprint race and after making a move on his Gearlink Kawasaki rival in the early stages he was able to edge out an advantage to claim his sixth victory of the season ahead of series leader Wilson. Oxford TAG Triumph’s Christian Iddon was third to secure his second podium finish of the season after fending off the challenges of team-mate Paul Young. Seeley said after the Sprint race: “The first two laps Ben tried to break away, but I didn’t panic and made sure I used all of the track with fast flowing lines. Then when I caught him I got that much drive onto the back straight, I wasn’t prepared to shut off and try to get in his slipstream. I used more of the track and the kerbs, pulled alongside and it was a matter of who braked the latest. I probably ran in a bit too deep but it gave me the lead. I could hear him for about a lap and after that I started to disappear but it was a good way to start the weekend.” In the Feature race Seeley was again determined to remain ahead of championship leader Wilson but having traded places on the opening laps the race was red flagged due to rain at the end of the tenth lap. On the restart Seeley again hit the front of the pack before claiming his second win of the weekend when the race was red flagged for oil on the circuit, although he was pushed hard by Iddon who was able to secure his best finish of the season in second place. It was a double podium for the Oxford TAG Triumph team as Young bounced back from a crash before the restart to take third with Wilson forced to settle for fourth place breaking his run of ten podium finishes. Seeley said: “Perfect weekends are hard to find but we ticked all the boxes and the Suzuki never missed a beat. In Sunday’s race I was contemplating not putting my hand up when it started to rain as I wanted to see it go two-thirds distance and get the result, but I also wanted to be safe and not sorry. All the hard work was undone, as it was re-started in a seven lap dash but we got away at the front again. I was actually happy to hear a Triumph with me as I knew someone else was up there challenging Wilson. “Iddon showed me a wheel or two, but I just defended and when the red flag went out with three laps to go we had our second win. We’ve taken quite a good chunk out of Ben’s lead and with a bit of luck we can take it down to the last races at Brands Hatch, where I feel I’ll have a psychological advantage,” added Seeley. Wilson said: “I was happy enough with second in the first race, I lost the front as I went through Craner Curves on lap three and decided to watch the gap and just control it. It was damage limitation as I need to be thinking of the championship and not make a mistake. In the second race we just couldn’t get the bike to do what we wanted. It was not an ideal result for us but at least we didn’t crash and we picked up another 33 points. We have to put this behind us and move on to Silverstone where we will try to get back winning races.” Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship, Sprint race result: 1.
