Sherstan takes Masters of the Mountains double win
(Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele, UT) Jesse Sherstan from Stony Plain, Alberta Canada took wins in both the premier King of the Mountain middleweight and superbike classes during a hot, Masters of the Mountains Round 5 at Miller Motorsports Park. Focusing on riding a superbike this season, Sherstan took the grid for the first time this year in the King of the Mountain GTU middleweight class. Starting from the back row, he got a great start and was second going into the first turn behind points leader Scott Decker. Sherstan passed Decker on lap 4 and led to the checkered flag for a win by less than half a second.
In the premier superbike class, King of the Mountain GTO, Sherstan led flag-to-flag battling Jeff Stern of Las Vegas, with Sherstan finishing by just seven-thousands of a second and taking a hard-fought win. “I didn’t get a lot of practice on the big bike, so the GTO race was the first time I could get out and put the hammer down all weekend,” said Sherstan. “I got a good start and tried to control the pace a little, but Jeff was right behind me almost the entire race. This win puts me into the points lead for the season championship, which is great. I want to thank my parent’s company, TG Transports, Kory Cowan and Aaron Clark. They’ve been a huge help this season. Also AXO, Arai, Galfer and FMS Optics.”
The other expert middleweight and big bike races saw battles among the series front-runners. Scott Decker took the checker in Middleweight Superbike and Middleweight Superstock, holding on to a season championship points lead the two classes, as well as King of the Mountain GTU.
In the open bike classes, Oleg Pianykh took a Open Superbike win, and Ryan Brand grabbed Open Superstock.
The new RacingExperience introduction, licensing and mentor program offered by UtahSBA has proven to be a big success at building the novice grids and preparing riders for a successful first season. With nearly 45 riders attending the class over the first five rounds of racing, graduates have gone on to show skill, poise and maturity as provisional novices with virtually no drama or racer attrition. RacingExperience lets riders interested in racing test the waters with a UtahSBA membership, a new racer certification class, a mentor, track time, practice starts and a mock race all on a regular race weekend for just $200. Regular trackday-prepped bikes are OK, so full race-prep is not required.
The seven-race Mountains series, developed by Miller Motorsports Park, organized by the Utah Sportbike Association (UtahSBA) and sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), was created to encourage competitive road racing at the club and regional levels. In its seventh year, the series has quickly turned into a premier event drawing top-level talent from around the nation.
