Kouki TAKAHASHI, Japan (RBB), 1:59.495 More, from a press release issued by Interwetten Moriwaki Moto2 Team: Lüthi finishes first free practice in Motegi in good middle field The first free practice at the Twin Ring Motegi in Japan did end quite well for Tom Lüthi and the Interwetten Moriwaki Moto2 Team. The first of three consecutive overseas races is the home race of the chassis supplier Moriwaki and Lüthi wants to give them the best possible result this weekend. After the first day, there still are some changes to be made on the set up to catch up the second Lüthi is missing to the leading group. But the team is confident that the target will be hit in these three days of Japanese Grand Prix. Tom Lüthi, 13 1’55.328: “The practice was not so bad today and we are quite satisfied with it. At the end we lost a second and we are not happy about that, but we changed a couple of setting and this went quite positive. Of course I want to improve over the weekend and I think I can meet our target of being further in front at the end of the race.” Terrell Thien, Team Manager: “The start of the practice was good as usual. At the end we lost some time and were not able to stay with the front. A few settings have to still be changed and tomorrow we will see where we can be.” More, from a press release issued by Marc VDS Racing Team: REDDING OFF TO A FLYER AT MOTEGI Scott Redding got his Japanese Grand Prix weekend off to a flying start today, finishing the opening free practice fourth fastest aboard his Marc VDS Moto2 machine. A crash after just four laps lost Hector Faubel valuable time, leaving him down in 35th position at the conclusion of this afternoon’s hour-long session. Redding was quick to make his mark at Motegi this afternoon, breaking into the top five on the timesheet right at the start of free practice. A change to the gearing on his Suter MMX machine lost the 17-year-old Briton some time during the session, but he was immediately back on the pace on his return to the track. The Marc VDS rider was running in fourth place as the session came to a close, but looked certain to top the timesheet with his very last lap, after setting the fastest time through the first three splits. Unfortunately for Redding he was baulked by a slower rider in the final turn and was unable to better the time of Julian Simon, the fastest rider on track at Motegi this afternoon. Faubel opted to run the harder option Dunlop tyres front and rear on his Suter MMX machine at the start of the session, but crashed after just four laps when he lost the front under braking. The 27-year-old Spaniard managed to ride the bike back to the pits, where the Marc VDS mechanics quickly repaired the crash damage, but was unable to improve upon 35th place on his return to the track. Scott Redding #45: 4th – 1’54.458 “I’m happy enough with today’s practice session. The bike and tyres felt good from the off; it was a little bit loose, but you expect that here at Motegi. We had to change the gearing halfway through the session, which lost us some time, but the lap times seemed to come pretty easy towards the end. I was on for a lap time that would have seen me at the top of the timesheet right at the end of the session, but got held up by Jules Cluzel in the final corner – he was on his own fast lap and didn’t know I was behind him. We might make some small changes to the bike overnight ready for tomorrow, when it’ll be full gas in qualifying once again!” Hector Faubel #55: 35th – 1’57.636 “We started the session on the harder option tyres front and rear. Grip was not so good here at Motegi today and, as I was braking in a straight line four laps into the practice, the front closed on me and I crashed. We lost a lot of time in the pits fixing the damage and we missed out on the chance to put in some faster laps. I hope the track conditions will improve tomorrow; the bike feels pretty good on track, although we maybe need to change the gearing slightly. What I need now is more laps on the bike, to get me closer to the top of the timesheet ahead of qualifying tomorrow afternoon.” Pete Benson: Scott Redding’s Crew Chief “That was a good session. Scott was happy with the whole package and that was reflected in his lap times, which were pretty consistent throughout. We had to shorten the gearing during the session, but Scott was back on the pace again straight away. He could have taken another 0.3s off his lap time on his last lap had he not been held up in the final corner, but fourth is good enough for the first day.” More, from a press release issued b JiR Moto2 Team: GP of Motegi First Free Practice: three JiR riders in top seven! Today saw a good start for the JiR Team at the Japanese track of Motegi, with three riders within the top seven. Simone Corsi and Alex De Angelis went on track with similar settings, while TSR’s test rider Yusuke Teshima testing an alternative set-up solution that gave important data for the machines’ development. This result, even if still only in free practice, proves the validity of the team’s technical base and is also an incentive to riders and technicians to improve still further in qualifying tomorrow. Alex De Angelis – 3 rd place: 1’54″456 “This first session is certainly positive, the third is a good result because it confirms the good feeling I have with the MotoBI and it is in good shape. I could have been faster if we only wouldn’t have wasted some time in the pits to fix a technical problem, but tomorrow we’ll have more time to further improve. We’ll also have to find the right set-up to fix the rear tyre that is a little unstable, but once more this is just a matter of doing some little steps forward.” Simone Corsi – 6th place: 1’55″051 “I’m pretty satisfied for how this first session went because the sixth-best time is a good performance that confirms that the machine is ok, but most of all because we have understood where I lose time from faster riders. The analysis says we need to fine tune our set-up and I have to work on my riding style, trying to find the best lines and for this the telemetry gave me important directions I can work in. For this I’m pretty confident that tomorrow we’ll be able to improve our performance.” Yusuke Teshima – 7 th place: 1’55″107 “It’s nice to be in top 10 as it has been some time since riding a Moto2 machine. I’ve never ridden here in Motegi with this bike’s configuration and seventh place is a good result. I tested different set-ups compared to Corsi and De Angelis to give the team good reference points to work on. In any case I want to make a good performance also in the race, therefore for tomorrow’s qualifying we’ll need to modify a little bit my set-up to gain some more confidence when it comes to the weight transfer on my bike during acceleration and braking.”
