WorldSSP: Sofuoglu Stays On Top
The Turk showed everyone how it’s done on Friday afternoon
Sofuoglu the man to beat
Kawasaki Puccetti Racing’s Kenan Sofuoglu led the charge on Friday afternoon at the Lausitzring, smashing his FP1 times and creating a new lap record of 1’40.901, ahead of second placed GRT Racing Team rider Gino Rea. Finnish wildcard Niki Tuuli (Kallio Racing) impressed on his second outing of the day, rounding out the top three.
“I’m happy that I got the track record because this is the track that I started on in my racing career,” recalled Sofuoglu. “Also I know the track really well so I’m happy that I set the record.”
Sofuoglu led for the entire second session with Rea his closest rival, before the Turk improved his own time, demonstrating why he is 4 times World Champion. Wide race lines on turn 5 caused debris from the track markers being run over, temporarily halting the session at the halfway point. Once the track was cleaned up, the battle for entry to Tissot-Superpole 2 resumed.
MV Agusta Reparto Corse rider Jules Cluzel put in a stunning lap in the last minutes of the second session to break into the top ten and finish in fourth ahead of Federico Caricasulo (BARDAHL Evan Bros. Honda Racing) in fifth. CIA Landlord Insurance Honda’s Christoffer Bergman ended the session comfortably in sixth position ahead of GEMAR Balloons – Team Lorini rider Ayrton Badovini in seventh.
Two riders who moved down the timesheet in the second session were Honda World Supersport Team’s Partick Jacobsen and Luke Stapleford of Profile Racing, who finished in eighth and ninth respectively. Kawasaki Puccetti’s Randy Krummenacher didn’t improve from the first session, coming home in tenth, but still gained direct entry to Tissot-Superpole 2.
Tissot-Superpole 2 will see the Top Ten battle it out for the top grid positions tomorrow at 11:55am local time (GMT+2) ahead of Sunday’s race.

Eighth place and Superpole 2 for Jacobsen at the Lausitzring

PJ Jacobsen has claimed eight place in the combined times of today’s two free practice sessions for the Supersport World Championship at the Lausitzring in Germany, where the ninth round of the season is currently underway. The young American had a good start to the day by posting the second fastest time in the morning session on board his Honda CBR600RR #2 machine.
Free practice 2 was not as kind to last year’s World Supersport Vice Champion, who was unable to improve on his FP1 lap-time and dropped down to a final eighth place at the chequered flag. By finishing in the top 10, however, Jacobsen earned a spot in tomorrow’s 15-minute Superpole 2, which takes place tomorrow from 11:55.

Today didn’t go as planned and it was a bit of a struggle, really. We need to try something tomorrow in order to improve our performance, especially with the gearing. I think we have found the right one and FP3 will tell if we’re right. Looks like it’s going to rain tomorrow and if it does, we have a good wet setup ready for it. Overall it could have been worse, we’re in Superpole 2 and I’m now looking forward to tomorrow.

It wasn’t as easy as we’d hoped today – especially after last month’s test. We found quite difficult to improve our morning’s lap-time and, in the end, few riders were able to do better than us. We are losing half a second in one single split but we know what to do now. If we manage to sort this one out, things will look a lot different tomorrow. PJ is normally quite good in qualifying and anything can happen, so we’ll see how it goes. We have a lot of work to do ahead of Superpole, but we’ll be ready.
