Another very exciting race weekend is in the books with the completion of another round of the 2013-2014 CVMA Winter Road Racing Series at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. The October 26-27 weekend held Round 2 of the series with a very respectable number of race entries. Mother Nature added to the weekend offering perfect racing conditions allowing for five new lap records throughout the weekend.
Round 2 included fun activities on Saturday evening. A Halloween party with music, dancing, and trick-or-treating for the kids was put on. Also included in the festivities was a costume contest with the winner scoring free race entries to the next round.
The 250cc classes were ones to watch as Kawasaki mounted Josh Fogle and Motorcyclist Magazine’s Ari Henning played cat and mouse in each of their races. Battling all weekend on the verge of the 250 Supersport lap record, the two riders would split race wins grabbing two victories each in the 250 Supersport and Ultra Lightweight Shootout classes.
The AP MotoArts team was once again on a mission this past weekend in the Lightweight twins classes scoring two lap records in the Formula 2 and Formula Twins races on Saturday. Rider Frankie Garcia rode his AP MotoArts prepped Suzuki SV650 to wins in the Formula Twins and Formula 2 races with lap records of 1.52.602 in Formula Twins and 1.52.302 in Formula 2. On Sunday Garcia would opt out of the twin races and focus on testing the team’s new Suzuki GSX-R600.
The middleweight races were once again dominated by AMA Daytona SportBike racer Benny Solis Jr. Solis would round out another weekend in the desert totaling seven victories on his Honda CBR600RR also scoring him a lap record in the Open Supersport class with a lap time of 1:48.859. The race wins didn’t come easy for Solis as In-House Suspension rider Brian Short followed closely behind waiting for any mistake. Short would finish runner-up to Solis throughout the weekend with lap times in the 1.49 range.
In the big bike classes it was all Jeremy Toye on his Lee’s Cycle Racing Pirelli shod Kawasaki. Toye took the win in the Formula Open race while also securing a lap record with a 1:48.064. In the Open Shootout race Toye received pressure from Benny Solis mounted on a borrowed 1000. Toye would ride flawless and make no mistake. Toye secured the race win while Solis picked up the class lap record with a blistering 1:47.449, his second lap record of the weekend.
The next round of the CVMA winter series is right around the corner. The winter series continues with Round 3, November 16-17. If you haven’t made it out to race with CVMA, now is the time. CVMA offers free reciprocity licenses to other road racing club members. The 17-turn, 2.68 mile Chuckwalla circuit is California’s newest track located about 40 minutes south of Palm Springs. The smooth wide circuit plays host to a variety of turns and has ample run-off for increased safety. Additionally, CVMA keeps two ambulances on site to insure everyone’s well being to help avoid delays in the race when a rider needs medical attention.
