THE GREEN FLAG DROPS ON ROUND 1 OF THE CVMA 2015-16 WINTER SERIES

Honors Fallen Rider Joanna Bitter, Benny Solis Snags Nine Wins

It was a weekend of excitement and solemnity as Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association pressed the starter button on a new race season and also paid tribute to a fallen family member, Joanna Bitter. Joanna passed on September 3rd and was memorialized Sunday with a flying lap by her husband, Bill McCoy. There was also a “moment of noise” during which club members revved their engines in Joanna’s honor. To further memorialize Joanna, CVMA retired her race number, 88, and has named Turn 4 “Bitter” in Joanna’s honor. You will be missed, Joanna.

It was an agonizingly hot weekend in Desert Center, but triple-digit temperatures and blazing sunshine didn’t seem to put a damper on the race action. Daytona Anderson landed the first knockout in the fight for the #1 plate in Sunday’s 12-lap SoCal Track Days Open Shootout. The race started with Benny Solis well ahead of the fight for second, which was fought between Daytona Anderson and Dale Kieffer. Midway through the race however, the entire grid shifted forward when Solis exited the track with an electrical issue. Anderson finished in the lead on his Yoshimura sponsored Suzuki GSX-R1000, followed by Dale Kieffer in second on his Racers Edge Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Ryan Matter in third aboard his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Solis was dealt some bad luck in Open Shootout, but he was clearly blessed with speed (and stamina!) throughout the rest of the weekend. The young rider won an astounding nine races during the two-day event, all despite stiff competition and punishing heat. Solis won the Attack Performance Formula Middleweight and Pirelli/Racer’s Edge Supersport Middleweight races on both days on his Honda CBR600RR and also dominated the Dunlop/RTS Formula Open and SD Track Gear Supersport Open races both days as well as winning Sunday’s TrackDaz Middleweight Shootout race on his 600.

The small-bike grids had quite a bit of new color for Round 1 in the form of numerous new yellow novice plates and several orange KTM RC390s, but it was a red Honda CBR300R that dominated the 350 Supersport and Sunline Energy Ultra Lightweight Shootout on both days with Ari Henning winning all four races. Shane Liberty took second in Sunline Energy Ultra Lightweight Shootout both days on his Kawasaki Ninja 300 followed by Josh Fogle on his AP MotoArts Ninja 250. Fogle won the 250 Supersport races both days, and on Saturday he was followed by Matt Cavarlez in second and Don Williams in third, while on Sunday Williams took second and John Semroska came in third.

Richard “Cowboy” Stamp garnered attention and a win on his new AP MotoArts-built Yamaha FZ-07R during Sunday’s 8-lap Lightweight Shootout class. Stamp progressed from second to first midway through the race and maintained his position, crossing the finish line in front of John Reynolds on a Suzuki SV650 and Eric Moore on a Yamaha TZ250.

With the conclusion of Round 1 the season’s first event is in the books. Round 2 of the 2015-16 Winter Series takes place on the weekend of October 17th and 18th.

CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from. Additionally, CVMA offers free reciprocity as a means of encouraging racers from other clubs to come out and compete. Log on to www.cvmaracing.com for more information.
