CVMA DRAWS NEAR-RECORD ATTENDANCE FOR MID-WINTER ROUND 3 RACING

December 3-4, 2016

Benny Solis sets new Supersport Open class record.

It’s that time of year again, when SoCal’s famously warm weather makes it one of the few places you can race come winter. And if you’re looking to stay sharp during the “off season” Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association is your best bet. This past weekend (December 3-4) CVMA held the third round of its Winter Series, and the weekend saw an impressive turnout. With 165 registered racers grids were large, and in the 30-bike Supersport Open race the rows of riders extended most of the front straight-away.

In Saturday’s Supersport Race Oleg Pianykh got the holeshot on his Yamaha YZF-R1, but was quickly overtaken by Benny Solis aboard a Honda CBR1000R. Solis maintained the lead and took the win, with Pianykh finishing second and Curtis Biegel taking third on his YZF-R1. Solis claimed first place again on Sunday and in the process turned a 1:47.143 lap, which stands as a new class record. Pianykh came in second Francois Dumas took third on his YZF-R1.

Solis also won Sunday’s 10-lap TrackDaz / SoCal TrackDays sponsored CVMA Shootout race, launching into the lead at the start and maintaining his position throughout the race. Solis has a history of success at Chuckwalla, but always on 600s. “I have a 1000 and we figured we should build it and use it,” explains Solis. “The 1000 is fast, at least for me since I’m used to a 600. I enjoyed it a lot because of the power and it was a challenge with the wind and the cold but the bike handled great.” Will we see Solis campaign a 1000 full time in the future? “We were just having fun,” says Benny, “but I’ll be ready if so!”

FemmeWalla, CVMA’s all-female class, saw a new name at the top of the results this past weekend. Valentine Welch won the class both days with on her GSX-R600 during her first-ever race weekend at the track, proving that she’s a skilled and adaptable rider. Both days Elaine Carpenter finished second on her Yamaha YZF-R6 With Ducati 899 mounted Elizabeth Campbell and Suzuki SV650 mounted Sofia Amadio placing third.

There was a fresh face at the front of the Supersport Middleweight class as well as Rafael DaSilva pulled a hat trick with wins on Saturday and Sunday on his Yamaha YZF-R6. DaSilva also raced a Zero FXGP electric bike in Formula 2, but wasn’t able to match his finishes in the Supersport class. “On the Zero I had some good battles,” says DaSilva, “but the rapidly dying battery made the bike slow down in the straights, so you’re forced to do your best entries and exits all the time in order to keep the momentum.”

In the end DaSilva finished off the podium, with Pittman Wallace snagging the Formula 2 win on both days aboard his Suzuki SV650. On Saturday Wallace’s win was a close one—Marcus DeMichele was just 0.1 seconds behind on his Yamaha FZ-07, with Cody Newman on his Ducati 748 just a few second further back. On Sunday Jon Glaefke took second on his Yamaha FZ-07 and Marcus DeMichelle took third.

In the small-bike classes Yamaha’s YZF-R3 is quickly becoming the dominant bike, as evidenced by loads of the little bike appearing on the grids. In Saturday’s 350 Supersport race the top three were all on R3s, with Chris Parrish finishing first followed by Jesse Norton and then Robert McCarron. In Sunday’s sprint Ruben Casarez ran to the front on his KTM RC390, leading Gabriel Hernandez III on his YZF-R3 and Chris Parrish on his Yamaha.

Mark Fitzsimmons was out in front in Saturday’s Ultra Lightweight Shootout race aboard a Honda-powered Moriwaki 250, followed by amateur rider Seth Hauer on his R3. Jesse Norton, also aboard an R3, took third. Hernandez won Sunday’s Ultra Lightweight Shootout race on his R3, with Casarez taking second on the RC390 and Fitzsimmons finishing third.

Racing resumes at Chuckwalla in 2017 on January 21-22, so if you’re sick of the cold, round up your buddies, pack the truck, and drive on out to Desert Center, CA.

CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.

Additionally, CVMA offers free reciprocity as a means of encouraging racers from other clubs to come out and compete. Log on to www.cvmaracing.com for more information.
