Solis Sets New Middleweight Record En Route to Multiple Wins

With the MotoAmerica season opener in Austin, TX, fast approaching, CVMA’s Round 5 event on the weekend of February 27-28, 2016 hosted a slew of racers looking to hone their skills before the national series kicks off in April. Additionally, the ideal SoCal weather drew riders from as far off as Quebec, Canada, contributing to near record grid sizes.

Benny Solis Jr., a perennial front-runner at CVMA, continued his winning streak on his Honda CBR600RR with firsts in Supersport Middleweight on both days and a clean victory in Sunday’s 10-lap Middleweight Shootout presented by TrackDaz. Throughout most of the weekend Oklahoma’s Conner Blevins kept on Solis’s tail, but in Sunday’s Supersport race Benny checked out, and with clean track ahead of him logged a blistering 1:46.909 lap, a new record for the class in the clockwise direction.

Another record was set this weekend by Colorado’s Wyeth Jackson, who turned a 1:54.566 lap on her Kawasaki ZX-6R en route to a win in Sunday’s all-female FemmeWalla race. Sunday’s podium was rounded out by Dani Taylor in second and Elaine Carpenter in third.

Pike’s Peak winner Jeremy Toye was in attendance on his 2016 Kawasaki ZX-10R, and won everything he entered, including Saturday’s Formula Open race and the weekend’s premier class, the 12-lap Open Shootout race presented by SoCal Track Days.

Sunday’s big-bike shootout provided great action for spectators, as young Solis antagonized Toye throughout the 12-lap event. It was an epic battle of corner speed versus horsepower as Solis closed in on Toye on his CBR600RR in the twisties, only to get zapped by the ZX-10R’s superior horsepower on the straights. Solis led the race for a short time, but couldn’t eek out a large enough lead to hold the position. In the end, Toye crossed the finish line just 0.386 seconds ahead of Solis. Daytona Anderson took third on his Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Quebec, Canada’s Francois Dumas also put on an impressive show, finishing on the podium in multiple classes on his BMW S1000RR, all despite fierce competitive and a total lack of experience at the Desert Center, CA, track. Dumas came in second behind Anderson in Saturday’s Supersport open event, followed by James Romero III in third. In Sunday’s Formula Open race, however, it was Dumas in front of Anderson, with the Canadian taking the win by a scant 0.031 seconds!
