Tommy Hayden will race in AMA Superbike and Supersport for the Yoshimura Suzuki team through the 2008 season, according to a knowledgeable source familiar with the deal. Hayden, 28, the eldest of three professional road racing brothers from Owensboro, Kentucky, made his AMA debut in 1995 on a 250cc GP bike at Mid-Ohio. He raced a privateer Kawasaki ZX-6 the following year and was subsequently signed to the Muzzy Kawasaki factory team to race Supersport and Superbike in 1997, when he won AMA Superbike Rookie of the Year honors, and 1998. In 1999, Tommy Hayden signed with the Yamaha factory team, won his first AMA Supersport race at Willow Springs (and became the first racer to ever win a 750cc Supersport race on a 600cc machine at Mid-Ohio) and finished runner-up in the Supersport Championship to younger brother Nicky Hayden. Tommy Hayden continued with Yamaha in 2000 and 2001, when he also raced a YZF-R7 Superbike. In 2002, he joined the factory Kawasaki team to race a 600cc ZX-6R in 600cc Supersport and in 750cc Superstock, and he took five wins between the two classes and finished second in both Championships. In 2003, Tommy Hayden used a 636cc ZX-6R to win five races in the 750cc Superstock class and place second in the Championship, while he won two races on a ZX-6RR and finished third in the Supersport Championship. Hayden broke through in 2004, winning four races en route to taking the AMA Supersport Championship. He also won two races on the all-new ZX-10R and placed third in the revised 1000cc Superstock class. Tommy Hayden used three victories to repeat as AMA Supersport Champion in 2005, in spite of finishing the season with a broken right hand that kept him out of the Superstock class for half of the year. Tommy Hayden is third on the all-time AMA Supersport wins list with 14. In 2006, Hayden concentrated his efforts on the AMA Superbike class, placing fifth at Daytona on the brand-new ZX-10R, nearly taking a podium finish at the second race of the year at Barber Motorsports Park and finishing as runner-up in the race at Laguna Seca. After 18 of 19 races, he was sixth in the Championship, in spite of breaking a bone in his left hand mid-season. Telephone calls to Tommy Hayden and Yoshimura Suzuki Team Manager Don Sakakura went unanswered Wednesday morning. Voicemail messages had not been returned at post-time.
