Two-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies was the fastest rider at lunch time Wednesday, the halfway point of the second day of a two-day MotoGP test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Riding his Bridgestone-shod Rizla Suzuki GSV-R, Spies lapped the 2.62-mile, 16-turn road course in 1:43.092, which is over one second faster than he or any of the five other riders at the test went on Tuesday. “The main thing for us is to get a lot of laps in and just get more comfortable with the bike,” said Spies, who turned 100 laps on Tuesday and did 70 additional laps, including a full race simulation, Wednesday morning. “Yeah, we did a little bit of a race stint before lunch, and we’ll do another one after lunch. These have been the most important days for me on the bike, two nice days. Just getting more comfortable on the bike, and every time we go out the times keep dropping and dropping.” Spies spent most of his lunch break in a press conference speaking to local news and motorcycle enthusiast media representatives about his test and his MotoGP experience and future. Earlier in the day 1993 500cc Grand Prix World Champion Kevin Schwantz hosted a “MotoGP 101″ question and answer session with the media reps to bring them up to speed on some of the nuances of MotoGP racing. Schwantz, who will be part of the television commentary team when MotoGP races at Indy (and two other of the four events to be broadcast on CBS and NBC this year), will ride the Indy infield road course on Thursday in his role as Rider Coach for the Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup series. Test Times (as of 2:00 p.m. local time): 1. Ben Spies (Suzuki), Bridgestone, 1:43.092, 70 laps 2. Olivier Jacque (Kawasaki), Bridgestone, 1:43.999, 45 laps 3. Wataru Yoshikawa (Yamaha), Bridgestone, 1:44.298, 46 laps 4. Niccolo Canepa (Ducati), Bridgestone, 1:44.388, 43 laps 5. Erwan Nigon (Honda), Michelin, 1:44.728, 43 laps 6. William Costes (Yamaha), Michelin, 1:45.301, 42 laps
