Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies turned the fastest time during Thursday morning AMA Superstock practice at Daytona International Speedway. Spies’ fastest time of 1:38.873 came on the 14th lap he did on a possible race tire. The race distance is 13 laps. Spies said he spent the session fine tuning his gearing. Spies was not the fastest rider in all timing segments of the track, however. Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki’s Aaron Yates, the second-fastest rider overall in the session, was faster than Spies through the infield and down the back straightaway, but Spies was 0.6-second faster than anyone else in the long, high-speed run from the chicane to the start/finish line. Ben Bostrom, the third-fastest rider in the session, said he did not make any progress during the session and that his Yamaha YZF-R1 was lacking top speed. Several riders, including Wednesday’s second-fastest Superstock qualifier Geoff May, opted to skip Thursday morning Superstock practice and instead ride in Thursday morning’s Superbike practice session.
