AMA Superbike Championship point leader Ben Spies has a broken fifth metacarpal in his right hand, an injury he suffered in a crash during qualifying Friday at Virginia International Raceway (VIR), but he is planning to attempt to qualify and race Saturday. Spies told Roadracingworld.com that he had the hand X-rayed at a local hospital Friday night, which confirmed the fracture. “The doctor told me not to ride,” laughed Spies, who also has a sore back from where his GSX-R1000 hit him. “Obviously, he doesn’t know the situation.” Spies sat out Saturday morning AMA Supersport practice. In fact, he will not race in the class for the rest of the 2006 season. Spies’ crew spent Saturday morning working to find him an oversized glove for his swollen right hand and to fit an extra-thick hand grip on his right clip-on. Spies leads the AMA Superbike Championship by 45 points over his teammate and the defending Champion Mat Mladin. Mladin is also less than 100% physically, as he is suffering from cold symptoms.
