Two-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies had minor arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday, in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Daniel Worrell, who works with the Dallas Cowboys NFL team, according to Spies, performed the out-patient surgery at the W.B. Carrell Memorial Clinic. Orthopedic surgeon to motorcycle road racing’s stars Dr. Arthur Ting was originally scheduled to do the procedure, but Dr. Ting was unavailable due to a family emergency, according to Spies, who did not want to wait an extra week to have the surgery. “It wasn’t a very complex surgery, and I wanted to get it done as soon as possible,” Spies told Roadracingworld.com Wednesday, adding that pain in the knee prevented him from doing any physical training for the last several weeks. “I, basically, haven’t been able to train since a couple of weeks before the Fontana test [in early-February]. I was hoping it was just gonna get better, but it hasn’t. I knew about three weeks before Daytona that I was gonna have surgery, but I just didn’t bring it up. It’s still not that big of a deal. “I just had some odds and ends that were floating around in my knee. I had some growths in there that were rubbing on some tendons, stuff like that. They just had to go in there and take a bunch of stuff out. It was nothing like my shoulder surgery. I’ll be back training here in a couple of days, which will be nice.” Spies said the condition did not affect him while he was on his Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 at the California Speedway test or at Daytona. “On the Superbike I couldn’t even feel it,” said Spies. “I just haven’t been able to do any real cardiovascular training in over a month, but, obviously, Daytona has nothing to do with cardio and that played no part in me getting my butt kicked at Daytona.” As minor as the surgery was, the relatively short recovery period will force Spies to miss next week’s multi-team test at Barber Motorsports Park. “I should be able to make the next two tests [at Laguna Seca and Infineon Raceway], but I’m not sure yet,” said Spies. “I just needed to get it done so that when we get to the heart of the season my training will be at the perfect timing. I wasn’t worried about it at Daytona. It doesn’t really matter if you’re fit or not at Daytona, as long as you can go fast. Obviously, we weren’t quick enough there. It’s nice to get it fixed now and be ready for the rest of the season.”
