Ben Spies led two starts of the AMA Superbike race at VIR, with at least one more start to go. The race was red-flagged the first time after 3 laps when Jake Holden highsided at the exit of turn one and required medical attention. Holden lay on the grass for a long time but ultimately walked into an ambulance. The restarted race was red-flagged when Jimmy Moore fell and his teammate Eric Wood ran over his legs, also crashing, the two bikes creating a large debris field. Mat Mladin, who was running a close second to Spies at the first red flag, got a terrible start the second time when his bike bogged off the grid. Mladin then charged from 15th to fourth in nine laps, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process and gaining rapidly on Spies and Aaron Yates, with Jake Zemke between Mladin and Yates.
