Fans at Infineon Raceway were treated to one of the most exciting Formula Pacific races in recent history last weekend, with Pacific Track Time’s Michael Earnest, former AFM number one David Stanton, and WSMC legend Jeremy Toye going head to head in a race-long, three-rider battle for the win. As the green flag dropped at the start of the race, it was Formula Pacific points leader and current WSMC number one Jeff Tigert who took the holeshot, with Earnest on his rear wheel. Tigert’s lead on his CM Motorsports tuned Honda was short lived, as Earnest took over the lead at the end of the first lap on his EDR Performance tuned Suzuki with a strong move on the brakes in Turn 11. One lap later, both Toye and Stanton slipped past Tigert in the same turn, setting the stage for the rest of the race. From that point on, Earnest, Toye, and Stanton put a small gap on Tigert, keeping the crowd on their feet as they exchanged positions in Turns 9 and 11 almost every lap. In the final turns of the last lap, Stanton was able to stay just out of striking distance of Toye, taking the win on his Mach 1 Motorsports Yamaha. Second went to Toye with third to Earnest, with 0.641 seconds separating the top three riders at the line. “What a great race,” Earnest stated during the podium ceremony. “I have to congratulate Dave – I wouldn’t want anyone else to be up there today. And Jeremy Toye – it’s amazing to be up there with him! I’d like to thank all my staff and riders of Pacific Track Time, you guys are really supportive. Terry and Dunlop, EDR Performance and Eric Doran, I feel like I have one of the fastest bikes out here!” Coming from the fourth row of the grid, Toye wasted no time in charging to the front of the field to challenge for the lead, riding a Lee’s Cycle BMW S1000RR. “I anticipated that I’d come out and have a good time, and we did just that – that was a BLAST to race!” said Toye. “I love this track, and there are so many fast guys here, that was a good time! My guys at Lee’s Cycle just busted their butts this weekend, they got me a bike that got around here pretty good! Also San Diego BMW, and RoadRacing World – this was a REALLY fun race, I haven’t had that much fun in a while!” Stanton’s win showed that he still had both the drive and the speed that won him several AFM championships over the years, despite a slow start to the season. “That was amazing,” said Stanton, who also won Open Superbike, Open Grand Prix, and Formula 40 Heavyweight. “Honestly, riding with Jeff, Jeremy, and Michael the level goes so much higher, and my level of comfort riding around these guys – it makes life lot easier out there when you trust the guys you’re leaning on. It was a hard race, I had to put a move on Chris (Siglin) at the start, I just put my head down and rode as hard as I could. The Dunlop tires helped me that much more getting to the front, they were consistent the whole time. Jeff Leggitt, for continuing to support me when I was nowhere near the front, Kenny Norman, Kyle, and Lisa, thank you for all your hard work – we really, really appreciate it!” “It was just such a battle, I knew Jeremy was right on me. I kept seeing +0, and that last lap took about a year to complete! It was a great time – I was really just hoping to be on the podium today, and to win it is just fantastic!” Round 6 was also a round of the California State Championship series, luring riders like Toye from WSMC and WERA competition from both ends of the state to compete at the 11-turn road course. Other riders with standout performances on the weekend include Lenny Hale with four wins (600 Production, 750 Production, 750 Superbike, and Formula 1) and Jay Avansino with three wins (Formula 4, 650 Twins, and Formula 40 Lightweight).
