From a press release issued by Motorcycling Australia: The accolades for Australian MotoGP sensation Casey Stoner continue to mount, after he was awarded the Dawn Fraser Award in the 28th Australian Sport Awards which were announced today. The Dawn Fraser award is the top award handed out by the Confederation of Australian Sport (CAS), and was given to Stoner in recognition of his outstanding international achievements and his contribution to Australian sport. The award had previously been won by the likes of Pat Rafter (Tennis), Karrie Webb (Golf) and Grant Hackett (Swimming), and Stoner became the first motorcyclist to gain CAS recognition since Michael Doohan in 1987. After he was crowned Young Australian of the Year on Australia Day, Stoner continues to be recognised for his 2007 efforts, which saw him become the second youngest rider ever to clinch the FIM Road Racing World Championship. The Dawn Fraser award was announced via a special online video presentation in conjunction with media partner SBS Television, and video presentations of the Gold Award winners can be viewed from today on both the Australian Sport Awards website – www.australiansportawards.com.au, and the SBS website – www.sbs.com.au. Australian Speedway rider Chris Holder was also nominated for an award in the Young Australian Male Athlete of the Year category. A complete list of Award winners is available on the Australian Sport Awards website.
